New Dumbledore Cast For 'Potter' Movies

Gambon Replaces Late Harris

POSTED: 12:47 p.m. EST February 21, 2003

The "Harry Potter" movies have found a new professor to head the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Studio Warner Bros. has confirmed that veteran Irish actor Michael Gambon will replace the late Richard Harris, who died in October of Hodgkin's disease. Harris appeared in the first two films, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

Gambon has appeared in over 70 films and television roles. His most recent projects include the films "The Insider," "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlotte Gray," "High Heels and Low Lifes" and "Gosford Park."

Gambon had been rumored for months to be the replacement for Harris. Veteran actors Christopher Lee and Ian McKellen balked at early rumors that they were being considered as the replacement.

Both Lee and McKellen play wizards in the "Lord of the Rings" films.

Shooting on the third Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," starts Monday in England. Veteran British actor Gary Oldman will play the prisoner.

His face looks familiar!

I think he's a great choice. No disrespect to Richard Harris, but his age and illness showed a lot in Chamber and Dumbledore is supposed to be a wee bit energetic.

The railway station used in the Harry Potters is the one in my home town in England. Wonder if I could have got myself a part as an extra.

Gambon should fit well to fill Harris' wizard shoes in the next Harry Potter movies. I also am very excited about Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, can't wait!

I think if you stopped a hundred people at random on the street and asked them if they knew who he was you'd be very lucky to get ten who did.

You're probably the only person in Burley who knows who he is.

I was hoping Peter O'Toole would get it. But Gambon is a good choice.

So far here's who we have as new additions to the Potter franchise:

Gary Oldman - Sirius Black

Michael Gambon - Albus Dumbledore

David Thewlis - Remus Lupin <--

Timothy Spall - Peter Pettigrew

Pam Ferris - Aunt Marge

Paul Whitehouse - Sir Cadogan

I wonder who they'll get for Prof. Trelawney?

Tim Spall is underrated. He should have more award nominations and wins due to his acting range IMHO.

I've always thought of Trelawney as a Judy Tenuda type, not that anyone in their right mind would ever cast her in anything.

This is going to be the best Potter film yet. After reading the book, seeing the cast choices and getting familiar with Cuaron's work, I'm definitely pumped.
