Anybody know what movie my friend is thinking of?

I'm talking to a friend from school and she was asking me about an '80s movie she saw on television a while ago. She didn't give me that many details, but she said:

- i saw it like a million years ago and never found out the title
- and it was like a coming of age movie...
- drama, about a bunch of teenagers.. hahaha and there was this phrase they used... "the beat the beat, bam bam" or something???
- umm ok... like the main boy was an outcast and a little weird, and no one liked him
- and then he met up with this boy and girl and they became friends...
- they smoked pot
- and met up with other potheads... uhhhhm
- and they had a big gang
- and they rode the "subway"
- and some other group of kids wanted to fight them or something
- but they didnt fight at all
- and towards the end.. they have this school play thing that gets canceled

Does anybody know what movie she is thinking of?

She was watching a John Hughes movie, passed out, woke up during The Warriors, passed out again and woke up again during Dead Poets Society?

Sorry, no idea.

Hmm.... I think I know the movie, but I can't think of the name.

The outcast is this blond haired kid (short haircut) who is really smart, and is fascinated with bugs. I believe that he was promoted a grade or two, which is why he is smaller than the others. He has a crush on a girl, but she has a boyfriend.

He wears glasses (that are flat) throughout the movie.

I believe he comes from a poor family, and the name of the movie is his name (I believe).

It would have been the late 80s or possibly very early 90s.

Yeah, Heat was definitely describing Lucas. But that's not what's described in the original post. I'm still going with the theory that this person confused several movies together.

No, based on the description, it can't be Lucas or The Warriors, and it can't be The Wanderers or Over the Edge either.

What about The Beat (1988) with John Savage? Or (unlikely) Tuff Turf with James Spader.
