Final Destination question with SPOILERS so don't read if you haven't seen it

I saw Final Destination 2 in the theater, so I went back and rented Final Destination again. As far as I can tell, Alex survived the first film (the sign missed him and swung back for Carter), so why is he dead in the sequel? Did I miss a throwaway line in the beginning of the sequel that explains this, or did the sequel's filmmakers prefer the original alternate ending when Alex is indeed dead and forget that it was "alternate"? Please tell me what I'm missing.

Alex decided to not make Final destination 2 because he landed better deals with these great films:

Extreme Dating
Trespass
Extreme Ops

They had to write him out somehow since he wouldn't do it.

Thanks, I know Devon Sawa didn't want to return and, as you've noted, made some wonderful career choices. My question is, did they actually write him out in a line in the sequel, or do they just say he's dead and hope I didn't remember the original film?

I believe they said in the sequel that a brick fell on him something.

They mentioned it twice, and then showed a newspaper article, including a picture.

What'd you think of that hokey finale at the very end? It cheapened the whole flick in my opinion, although I still enjoyed it...

It didn't feel like it was part of the movie. Seemed like something they would put in the deleted scenes section of the DVD, but funny none the less.

Sadly, the movie's over; wait--no it's not ending has become firmly entrenched in the genre. Still, I laughed at the final scene as I did most of the move. An enjoyable 90 minutes.

They explained that he was killed and they showed a newspaper headline too.
