Where's About Schmidt for Best Picture?? I thought this one was a lock... and to bump it for LOTR: TTT seems silly.

While I really enjoyed TTT, I don't feel it deserves a nomination this year, IMHO. There were just too many strong movies.

Nevermind that FOTR should have won last year...

Only real big surprise for me is Christopher Walken for the Supporting Role nod. I'm glad he got it, but a bit surprised.

about Schmidt was a longshot. You could pretty muchpencil in LOTR:TTT, Chicago, The Hours, and Gangs of New York for Bst Picture. That lost spot could have gone a few ways, but the Pianist is getting a lot of press, so no big shock. these are all the films getting the awards.

biggest surpise to me is no Peter Jackson

Wonder if Mr. Polanski can come back to America without getting arrested if he wins for Pianist?

Also, anyone else wish Moby had gotten a nom. for some stupid score so he and Eminem would mix it up back stage? Can't wait to see if Em performs at the ceremony.

I never considered TTT a sure thing. With Far From Heaven and About Schmidt left out - I really don't understand this nomination.

I assumed Chicago, The Hours, GONY and The Pianist and either FFH or AS.

I thought Gangs of New York was adapted, or at least based on, Herbert Astbury's book of the same title. According to IMDb, the Writers Guild determined that Jay Cocks came up with the original story.

Also, technically My Big Fat Greek Wedding was adapted from Nia Vardalos' one-woman stage show. I guess the Writers Guild determined it was original.

I dunno, while I saw and loved TTT, I've also seen all of the Cinematography nominees and don't really have a problem with them. I will have a problem if anything other than Far From Heaven wins, though. Best autumnal cinematography I have ever seen.

Have to agree there, TTT, while a great film, is not among the five best this year.

Queen Latifah???
Have you seen Chicago? She was great in her role and deserves this nomination. And no, I'm not a fan of her music.

So does Chicago go the way of Ben-Hur and Titanic and win most of the awards it's been nominated for? Or does it go the way of The Color Purple and get completely shutout? Or somewhere in between?

Thank God that Richard Gere did not get nominated for Best Actor. I have no idea how he managed to get the Golden Globe for his performance.

No Peter Jackson is very surprising as well.

Anyone know the totals count for the movies? Seems like Chicago had the most by far...

I'm disappointed about Far From Heaven not being nominated for Best Picture.

I think Richard Gere belonged in the supporting category. He might have gotten a nomination there.

I hope Queen Latifah's nomination doesn't mess up Catherine Zeta-Jones' chances.

One thing though.

I think AMPAS voters will more likely give the important Oscars next year to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King as a cumulative award for Peter Jackson's landmark movies. That means late next February (the Oscar ceremonies will be moved up a month starting in 2004) Peter Jackson will have to polish up his acceptance speech skills.

As for this year, I'll say Chicago wins Best Picture due to the fact it's the least controversial of the Miramax releases that was nominated.

Animated movies:

Spirited Away

Treasure Planet

Mike's New Car, while awesome, didn't exactly get released on anything but DVD, did it?

That's a bigger release than most nominees in that category usually get.
