I need to make a drive compilation, give me some suggestions!

Making yet another 6 hour drive this week and I'd like to get suggestions on good drive music. I'd like to keep it upbeat as possible. Thanks!

[It's deja vu.... all over again!]

As "rock" is invariably seen as typical "driving" music, you may also like to check out the suggestions in Betho's: What songs would be good for a classic rock compilation?

When a pal asked a similar question on Usenet a while ago, here is what people said. I turned the first set - all from one guy - into a table (my own suggestion is the compilation at the end this post; not exclusively rock like these first selections but maybe still worthwhile if a change of pace is required):-

Van HalenMean StreetsTake your Whiskey homeRomeo's Delight
Black SabbathSupernautNational AcrobatAfter Forever

Here are a couple of alternative individual compilations that were posted:

Hole In The Sky (Black Sabbath)
Strutter (Kiss)
Symptom Of The Universe (Black Sabbath)
Echoes (Pink Floyd)
Megalomania (Black Sabbath)
Built For Speed (Motorhead)
Side 2 of MOR (Black Sabbath)
I Am The World (Mortiis)
Sabbra Cadabra Live (Black Sabbath)
Eating Ice Cream With The Devil (Supernaut)

and....

Kill the King (Rainbow)
Save Yourself (MSG)
You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget (YM)
Dangerous Tonight (Alice Cooper)
The Same Thrill (Scorps)
Rock "N" Roll (Motorhead)
Crash Dive (Saxon)
Hall Of The Mountain King (Savatage)
Problem Child (AC/DC)
Headed For Nowhere (Triumph, w/ Morse and Emmet duelling)

And this is just a bunch of stuff various people suggested:

Ted Nugent - Turn it Up
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
Motorhead - Killed By Death
Vinnie Moore - Minds Eye (whole album)
AC/DC - Back In Black (whole album)
Saxon - Northern Lady
Twisted Sister - You Can't Stop Rock N Roll
Judas Priest - Freewheel Burning
Accept -Fast as a Shark
Judas Priest - Hell Patrol
Motorhead - Overkill
Metallica - Hit the Lights
Ozzy - Bark at the Moon (if it's late)
AC/DC - Ride On (if it's even later, and it's an endless road)
Streets - Crimes In Mind
Mr. Big - Price You Gotta Pay
TNT - Intuition
Hughes/Thrall - The Look In Your Eyes

Here is the compilation tape I originally put together for a friend who was about to go on holiday. I'm not so sure driving was involved but, as I recall, the track selection took me some time so I thought I'd recycle it here [again ]

Sort of an odd thing to recommend for, depending on style of music you like...and be careful with some stuff, as it may lull you to sleep.

I've always enjoyed "Flying in a Blue Dream" album by Joe Satriani...which has a cool song on it I believe is called "Drive." Most songs on here are pretty fast, but not "metal fast", some instrumental, some with vocals, and a slow song or two on there. Very cool album overall.

I also like electronica stuff for night driving if I'm going through a city. For me, electronica is music that's programming dominated...stuff like Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, and even Prodigy (Fat of the Land is the only album of theirs I've heard...good stuff).

If I think of more I'll update this post.

No "drive" compilation tape is complete without the B-52's "Planet Claire."

And if you're just absent-mindedly doing "circles" around the lamp posts in the McDonald's parking lot, sipping a vanilla shake, then nothing beats "Rock Lobster," also by the B-52's.

Not that I ever, ever, ever did that when I was a teenager or anything.

Ask the guys that compile stuff for people just for fun. You might find an already done track listing:

Thanks for the suggestions. The main problem I'm having is that radio plays nothing but love songs. At least that's the way it seems now that my relationship with my SO has gone south. My top choices favor Megadeath's Symphony of Destruction, Mary J Blige's Family Affair, Eminem, Everclear, maybe Foo Fighters.

I'm not really into rap but a few songs are enjoyable. I'll check a couple of those out since I'm driving up to Minnesota.

Mmm, I don't know if this is going to be exactly your taste, but I've always found these to be my favorite driving songs:

Modest Mouse - Styrofoam Boots/All Nice On Ice, Alright
LIARS - Grown Men Don't Fall in the River, Just Like That
The Beatles - Revolver (entire album)
The Pixies - Surfer Rosa (entire album)
At the Drive In - Arc Arsenal
Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister (entire album)

Ain't that always the case? Well, if a sour relationship is a current problem, I once again point to Satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream album, specifically a quirky little song that's powered by a banjo (yup, Satch rocks so hard he can rock the banjo!). The song is called "The Phone Call", and it's basically him calling his ex saying he's GLAD its over....a good, no great song!
