Cartridge Could Allow Downloads From TV To Game Boy

Participating Shows Would Provide Game Elements

POSTED: 10:30 a.m. EST January 22, 2003

OK, so you're tired of the game in your Game Boy Advance.

You may soon be able to make it more challenging by turning on your television.

Bob Sanderson with Veil Interactive says all you'd need to do is point the Game Boy Advance at your set. Within a few seconds, he says, your game would contain new elements -- new enemies, new weapons and new allies.

These elements arrive inside your system thanks to a special cartridge. The elements would be plucked from participating television programs -- whether it be cartoons or game shows.

Sanderson says it's even possible whole games could be downloaded from your TV.

The cartridge that makes it all possible will retail for about $20, he said.

There isn't much to this story. I wonder what this is all about. Does it sound interesting?

How does it capture data? I know TV channels have some bandwidth to use (maybe make a close captioning track be digital 0s and 1s), but could you use a cable box? Is this more like SegaNet of the mid-90's?

Sounds really interesting BTW.

Here's a little bit from their webpage. Click it on for a color graph of how it should work.

VEIL Interactive Technologies and X-traFun, Inc. to Co-Develop New Interactive Televi

http://www.x-trafun.com/pressrelease_111102.htm

Enhancements will provide SDIO compatible devices with interactive television capabilities

ST. LOUIS, Missouri, November 7, 2002 - VEIL™ Interactive Technologies, the provider of proprietary, wireless data transmission delivery systems for interactive television, today announced that the company will be co-developing a VEIL-enabled Secure Digital Input Output (SDIO) card for interactive television with X-traFun, Inc. X-traFun, Inc., the world's first wireless mobile Game Boy cartridge and services company, will design the architecture for an optical VEIL decoding SDIO card for PDA's and mobile devices. This new international expansion card will allow users to interact with television broadcasts that have been encoded with VEIL data.

"By the Consumer Electronics Show in first quarter 2003, we will introduce the capabilities of VEIL in the SDIO readied, Game Boy Advance devices. In addition to approximately fifteen million already existing Game Boy units, the VEIL enhancements will extend to other SDIO enabled hand-held devices including PDA's, mobile telephones and more. According to the SD Association (SDA), there are over 100 different SD-enabled consumer electronic devices on the market. By reaching the screens found in PDA's, advertisers and content providers will be able to develop interactive games, contests, and promotional opportunities helping drive consumers to point-of-sale. All these possibilities could result in renewed interest in programming and a significant new revenue opportunity for all content providers," explains Edward J. (Ted) Koplar, President and CEO of VEIL Interactive Technologies.

X-traFun enables wireless transformation of content via the internet. Users can access the internet using the Game Boy Advance handheld wireless console. The company has designed and developed a cartridge for the Game Boy Advanced that will enable mobile edutainment for the youth market. In addition to interactive play, young people can now receive and send emails, perform chat messaging, and read e-books. VEIL's SDIO card enhancement to X-traFun's cartridge will link Game Boy Advance to television content. Applications will include the ability to receive new Game Boy games and enhancements directly from encoded programming airing on television.

"Developing this product with VEIL Interactive will significantly enhance the functionality of X-traFun's cartridge for Game Boy Advance or any device with a standard SDIO card feature. We are very excited about the possibility of SDIO card users being able to interact with television content," said Mark Kramer, President and CEO of X-traFun, Inc.

About the Technology
VEIL is an encoded data stream in the video picture that is invisible to the human eye and can be received by a portable handheld device anywhere that an encoded broadcast or video can be seen. The optical VEIL platform is capable of delivering text based data at speeds entirely compatible with display technologies on handheld devices. Optical VEIL's transmission method works with all broadcast standards (NTSC, PAL, and SECAM) providing affordable, leading-edge iTV enhancements to a range of products include toys, games, PDA's, universal remotes, mobile phones, and set-top boxes.

Applications of VEIL technology includes customized promotional events, viewer loyalty programs, interactive gaming and more. VEIL is the logical link to driving consumer acceptance of smart card technologies by providing capabilities such as data transfer of special offers and information, using the power of television content as a marketing locomotive. This ability to send data along with electronic barcodes opens up a whole new world of possibilities, linking TV content from personalized consumer devices through point-of-sale.

This is an old news release, but it should be interesting to see how this thing works out.

Sounds kinda cool. Could be an interesting way to garner television ratings. "Watch Pokémon this week and get MewThree!"
