Movies that were masterpieces but ruined because of their notariety

Basically, movies that were once revered as having great twists and suspense but lost the impact on you because you knew pretty much everything going into it.

The classic case with me is Psycho. It has long been known that
Spoiler:
Norman is "mother."
and while still a good movie, I didn't get the shocker ending audiences did back in the day.

I love that movie, even though I've seen it like 50 times and I know the ending, its still imo a great movie.

Citizen Kane. I think the ending was spoiled for me by a "ghostbusters" cartoon episode.

Same here, except the culprit was a Peanuts cartoon strip, circa 1970. I didn't get it when I was 10, but for some painful reason the spoiler stayed with me, and when I finally saw Citizen Kane years and years later I already knew all about:
Spoiler:
Rosebud being a sled

I agree with all of these choices. Planet of the Apes. The ending is part of pop culture now (not to mention on the cover of the DVD), so it's hard to imagine the impact to the original audience.

Agree with all these. I want to also add The Sixth Sense, although not considered classic masterpiece, the big surprise ending was ruined for me and I can't grasp the way audiences felt during their first viewing.

You can't help a film becoming notorious for having a certain scene or ended in it. Word of mouth will always get around. It's marketing campagns for movies like Arlington Rd. that really bug me, since the TV commercials all said it had a super duper surprise plot twist ending. I've had the pleasure of seeing many other good movies that weren't marketed all too well and they ended up leaving more of an impression on me because of that.

In the case of Citizen Kane, since in the end Rosebud means everything and nothing, knowing that it's a sled really doesn't ruin ones enjoyment of watching it the first time.

Citizen Kane was ruined for me, but I was still able to enjoy it quite a bit.

The Usual Suspects' ending I knew ahead of time, which lessened the movie for me.

The Perfect Storm's ending was ruined, though I should have known anyway.

Fight Club's big twist, again, ruined. And Unbreakable.

I honestly don't know how Citizen Kane's ending could be spoiled. So what if you know its a sled. There was so much more to that meaning, knowing it was just a sled doesn't really ruin the movie.

In all honesty, that was quite ambiguous in its presentation to the audience and many (myself included) were not convinced until they got it confirmed in ROTJ.

In my mind, what's almost as bad is when you hear that there's a surprise "twist" ending, but nothing specific is told. Two examples: I guessed the ending of Sixth Sense and was totally duped by the Crying Game (much to my psychi-scarred shame). But in both cases i spent most of the movie trying to pick up on the twist and didn't just sit back a simply enjoy the movie.

The DVD release of
Spoiler:
The Others
does just that by putting a review quote on the friggin' FRONT cover that says "A wicked twist of an ending", which pretty much ruined it for me after about 2 minutes into the film.

I don't want to threadcrap but isn't this topic kind of defeating its own purpose. I mean you people are mad because you knew a movie had a twist ending yet every other post is aboot a new movie that was ruined because of a twist ending. If people come to this thread they might learn of six or seven movies they've not yet seen have a twist ending. (Quietly put my flame-proof suit on)

I actually saw the ending coming about 1/2 way through the movie, it just reminded me of Sixth Sense.

The movie gave you clues about it through out the movie and it doesn't make much sense until you turn it around, then it all makes sense and logical.

I'll throw in The Exorcist. All through my childhood and young adulthood I heard about how this is the scariest movie EVER! My Mom even refused to ever watch it again.

I finally rented it a couple of years ago and it wasn't scary to me in the least. All of the most notorious scenes (
Spoiler:
Reagan's head spinning, the pea soup vomit, etc.
were ruined for me years and years ago as I had seen them in clips many times on TV.
