The Pianist an indie? It cost $35 million, which might be small fry to Michael Bay, but considering the scope of the whole thing, I think it's obnoxious to consider it an independent production.

Of the list, I am definately looking forward to The Pianist and Rabbit-Proof Fence, and thanks to this weeks episode of Ebert and Roeper, Nicholas Nickleby. I hadn't even heard of that before today, but it looks pretty good.

I don't see what the price tag has to do with it - an independent film is generally considered to be one that was made independently of studio financing. So if Bill Gates decided to take $100 million of his money and make a movie, it would be (technically) an "independent" film.

The Pianist-This is a very good movie. I recommend it.
Rabbit-Proof Fence-Had a chance to see this a few months ago, but didn't because it just didn't sound very interesting to me.
Narc-This is a good movie. Great performance by Ray Liotta. I recommend seeing it.
Nicholas Nickleby-I'll probably watch this soon.
Talk to Her-I've never heard of this until this thread.

The Pianist - haven't seen, but will.
Rabbit-Proof Fence
Beautiful, meditative film that glides on the ethereal cinematography of Christopher Doyle.
Narc - haven't seen, and probably won't depending on word of mouth. The trailer makes the film look like another permutation of the Touch of Evil formula (but I don't trust trailers too much).
Nicholas Nickleby - haven't seen, and this is another that will need some strong word of mouth to get me into the theater.
Talk to Her
A great film that takes a lot of inventive routes to tell a smart story, with references from Buñuel to Hitchcock and then some.
and my own "Five Must-See Indies" (American):
ivansxtc.
Secretary
Kwik Stop
Diamond Men
Tully

I agree. I just saw it tonight. On the surface it seems like it might be just another crime movie but it turns out its not.
