How did Faramir know of Boromir's death?

Faramir mentions to Frodo that Boromir is dead and it seems to throw him for a loop. I cannot help but wonder how Faramir found out since his brother was placed in a boat that went over a waterfall.
Granted, in the book it claims that Boromir's boat survived the falls and wound up going through Osgiliath, but that sounds kind of hard to believe and even Tolkine himself said it was legend. Any input?

I think he found the broken Horn of Gondor (at least my very distant memory of the book says so).

actually as you remember from the first movie they put his body on the Elf boat and sailed him down the river.

from the book: since it was an elf boat even though it fell down the falls the boat did not tip over. so Boromir's body continued down the river and past the place where Faramir was who saw the body with his broken sword and cleaved Horn of Gondor.

In the book it implied that Faramir had some of the gifts of the Kings of old and that he felt he had to go to the river and saw his brother's body. The old kings had some gifts of insight and could at times see a glimpse of the future much like Elrond who has the gift although stronger than the gift that men had.

There is indeed a picture from the movie of Faramir holding Boromir's broken horn.

According to the book, the boat carrying Boromir's body went all the way from the falls of Rauros to the Great Sea without tipping over or sinking. Faramir saw it floating by on the Anduin but was unable to recover it due to the speed, width, and depth of the Great River.

Then how did he get the horn?

I read the books about half a year ago and correct me if I am wrong but wasn't the horn of Gondor heard all the way back in the White City when he blew it on the edge of the river in Boromir's fight with the Uruk-hai?

In the book the horn came floating by a little while after the body.
