so basically you want a receiver/speaker combo to hook up to your pc. Since it's not a living room, you probably don't need to spend $500 to get all that power. Is it in a bedroom? of so, less money will give you plenty of power to blow the room out
I'm not familiar with the whole HT scene but hopefully some guys here can give you some receiver/speaker suggestions to go along with your SB Live 5.1..... And if you're using MSN wallet it looks like it needs to be something Circuit City carries and needs to be purchased before midnight tomorrow, the 22nd.
oh, and welcome to dvdtalk!

If you are looking to use CC/MSN then I would jump on the Onkyo. It could also be a starting good system for upgrading.
Another system to look at is the Klipsch Promedia system at 399. THis has the power built into the sub so it has no reciever but it is very well reviewed.
I would go listen to both and get a feel for shch you like better.
Side note - I think the MSN deal has expired!

msn offer says "This offer is active from 11/25/02 to 12/22/02 (end date subject to change by MSN)." Wonder how to find out if it's still going....

If the Onkyo you're looking at is the HTiB (HS650 or something like that) for $600 check out www.shoponkyo.com. Right now they're having a 25% off sale on all refurbs and free shipping - you can get that set (when it's in stock, but I've heard it comes back all the time) for around $320. You can't use the MSN deal but you still save around $200
