Video Game Industry Gets TV Award Show

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It's a hit-driven business given to flashy premieres and high-profile talent and now the video games business has gone fully Hollywood: it has its own red-carpet awards show.
The National Network, a unit of the MTV Networks division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE:VIA - news) on Thursday said it will develop, produce and air an award show for the video game industry to be shown toward the end of 2003. No venue for the show was announced.
The network said the two-hour show will honor categories like "Hottest Hero and Heroine," "Most Addictive," "Coolest Villain," "Best Game based on a Movie," "Best Celebrity Actor and Actress in a Game" and "Game of the Year."
Though many may not realize it, a number of top video games feature celebrity cameos. The hottest game of the year, "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," features voice work by Ray Liotta, Dennis Hopper, former football star Lawrence Taylor, and porn star Jenna Jameson and others.
The network cited a fit between its target audience -- people ages 25 to 34 -- and the core audience for video games as a reason for doing the first-of-its-kind show.
While the games business has had awards events in the past, they have traditionally been tied to industry conferences and have not been televised.
Comcast Corp. (NasdaqNM:CMCSA - news) launched a digital cable channel devoted solely to video games, G4, earlier this year.

AS much as I like to see video games get recognition, the last thing we need is another televised award show. Especially if they're going to dumb-it-down with categories like "hottest heroine" etc.
Chalk that one up as another award show I won't be watching. In fact I'll probably be playing games instead.

This show will tank. See, the reason that people watch the Oscars and what-not is to see all the beautiful people. There aren't a lot of beautiful people in the gaming world.

If they make it like an award show like the Oscars or the Emmy's with people clapping and such it will be really stupid.
The only time video games have ever been portrayed in a non-dumbed down manner is on Extended play, they have really got the video review format right. I'll still watch this show to see if i don't run away cringing in fear.

They need to have some of the "cool awards" but I agree that there should be some that have some meaning as well. There are games that make huge strides and the only ones that know are into games. Make the show and even if only gamers watch it there will be news of who won and the studios who have done great jobs will get their names mentioned via the normal news as well. These people work hard on these games and should get as much credit as they can.

Man...why is everyone putting this down?
this is good for us in the gaming world...finally this industry (which BTW made more money than the box office this year *10 billion* ) is getting some well deserved recognition
true itll be interesting how this event will turn out, but i think its a step in the right direction for something which i think will be one of the biggest forms of entertainment in the years to come....
im just plain tired of this industry being the scapegoat for all sorts of problems...

"he sniped from that far a distance!? that must mean he was practicing on halo 1st!"

Those awards made me cringe. I would be more interested in an ACTUAL awards show. Maybe just a one hour thing though with no big ceremony and corny acceptance speeches. Just straight up awards and clips.

I agree that more awareness would be nice. But it's not going to happen with catagories like "Best all-around carnage fest" and "Biggest Badass".
Yeah, I see the respect rolling in.
The remark about the pretty people is about spot on.
What is more, there is already an awards "show" for videogames. It may not be on TV, but damnit at least it has some merit.

I second what Jeff says. If they treated videogames as a truly serious entertainment field that is deserving of actual awards than maybe people would be more willing to accept it. By rewarding hottest babe you're really just asking to have more ridicule heaped upon the industry, and it will never be able to clear the geek stigma that many people see it as having.
How about awards like:
Greatest advances in AI
Best storyline
Best voiceacting
Best art team
Best development team
Most revolutionary new feature in a game
Game of the year
I don't know if you wanted to break it even further into best game by genre because then people can get really nitpicky about what belongs where, and would it be fair to put a baseball game against a football game against a hockey game? Would you need to split those? I say avoid that and don't give awards by genre.
I don't mind some fluff categories as a way to lighten up a serious awards show, but what I'm hearing of this show is a huge disappointment. The even sadder thing is that most people who are into videogames might be disheartened at the tone of the show (I said might since I'm not sure of the consensus) thereby giving it poor ratings, and we will never be able to get another show like it.

Jeff hit the nail on the head.
With those lame categories, and the likely "E3 Like audience in attendence" this show won't help gamings image at all. If anything it will take gaming from "being for kids" to "being for geeks."
I mean "hottest heroin" really doesn't imply much "coolness" does it.
