Mario 128 and Pikmin 2 in Development for GameCube

By: Sam Kennedy December 10, 2002 11:11 AM PST

In the latest issue of the Japanese version of Playboy, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealed what two of his next projects for the GameCube will be: Pikmin 2 and Mario 128. According to Miyamoto, Mario 128 is based off of the demo that was shown at SpaceWorld 2000 that showed 128 Marios running around on screen at the same time.

You will feel something new in this game that wasn't in Mario Sunshine," the legendary game maker told Playboy. Coming from Miyamoto, we don't find that hard to believe.

Planet Gamecube had a little more, with Miyamoto saying that he realized that Mario Sunshine was really just a remix of Mario 64 and didn't offer enough new to generate super sales and that Mario 128 will change that.

Cool! I'm interested in what MArio 128 has to offer. And if they can add some more stuff to Pikmin(not sure what) then that will be sweet too!

128 marios? That actually sounds a bit like Pikmin.

hehehe, You can tell Nintendo is aiming at the adult audience when Miyamoto breaks gaming news in a soft porn magazine first!

Actually the old Mario 128 demo ended up being Pikmin. Well same basic engine anyway.

It's hard to tell what Mario 128 will end up like now. I'm sure it won't be anything like Pikmin, or they would have just put out Mario 128 instead of Pikmin.

I'm looking more forward to Pikmin 2. I hope it is a lot longer than the first. Add some more different pikmin like green or purple. Maybe green to dig through the ground, purple to fly? Who knows. Just bigger and longer! Please!

Well I guess I'm gonna have to pick up Pikmin so I can check it out before Pikmin 2 comes out.

Yeah, Mario 128 was just a made up title for an early GC demo that featured 128 Marios running around on the screen at the same time.

Actually, the "just reading it for the articles" thing carried some weight for a while. In the 70's, Playboy had serious literary and journalistic content, but that's been eroded, first from magazines showing more skin, like Hustler and Penthouse, and then from magazines showing less, like Maxim.

That's driven Playboy to become more pandering in their content, as it has with Esquire and Rolling Stone, who have similarly given up their loftier images for the cheap bucks.

However, Playboy's interview features are still the best Q and A format features around, and if they had one with Miyamoto, I'd have to buy that issue to see that. Unfortunately, this sounds like it's just a snippet.

I read PB is totally restructuring their entire mag, due to the fact that Maxim is gaining fast in its bid to be the #1 mens mag. It is in a close second. I for one hope they don't turn it into Maxim. Their are enough like it already (stuff, fhm etc), but it does need a new look and feel.

An interview with Miyamoto would be a start.
