Ghost Recon - I'm Confused

I finished Ghost Recon's campaign in recruit mode. Now I'm working on unlocking everything.

There's no way I'm going to finish many of them though. Recon with one person in veteran is kicking my ass. Saving every 5 seconds doesn't interest me either.

So, I figured I'd play the campaign in veteran mode to build up my skill points.

But there doesn't seem to be a connection between previously completed campaigns/tasks and skill points. Everyone is locked again when I start the campaign in veteran.

Quick missions seem to have a different group of people to choose from every time you start, meaning they all suck. You can't use your specialists from the campaign in the quick missions due to the kit restrictions.

I thought the idea was to complete the game in recruit, building up your skill points, allowing you to use those people in the harder quick missions. That doesn't seem to be the case though.

If there's nothing to be gained from assigning skill points, then what's the point? Does it only apply to an active campaign?

It seems like they missed a great opportunity to keep people playing. I was excited about doing the single player campaign all over again because I wanted to build up my skills for everyone. Since it's back to square one, what's the point?

none of my comments are meant to be personal attacks, i think this game is the best thing since sliced bread, so i want to help you enjoy it as much as me!

if you found veteran to hard, you need to re-think how you play this game, being stealth, and using the sniper rifle is essential to finishing the missions without dying allot.

Saving every 5 seconds doesn't interest me either.
save every time you kill a group of enemy soldiers, i save about 5-8 times per level.
But there doesn't seem to be a connection between previously completed campaigns/tasks and skill points. Everyone is locked again when I start the campaign in veteran.
during campaign mode, skill points are assigned per completed mission with each solider.

=============
the rest of your comments/frustration are based on this:

1. if you unlock soldier XXX in Recruit you can only use him for Quick Missions in Recruit.
2. the skill points you build up for soldier XXX in recruit mode are only available when you use the solider for Quick Missions in Recruit
3. the same goes for veteran and elite.
=============

i hope this helps!

its not back to square one, there is TONS of replay value in the game, in my opinon it is the best game i have played!

completeing the quick missions alone on elite are tons of fun!

I completed the POW mission and M04 in Elite. Lots and lots of saving, but I did it. I'm trying to be stealthy, I just get surrounded, pinned down and killed rather quickly.

If I lose a soldier in a quick mission, is he gone forever? I lost 2 in M04 and I'm wondering if I should proceed or start over.

A good manual would help. This game really needs a FAQ but I've yet to find one.

About your #1 comment: Soldiers I unlocked in the recruit campaign are available in veteran/elite quick missions, they just don't necessarily meet the kit restrictions for some missions. I used several recruit unlocked soldiers in M04 elite since it didn't have any 'must use gun X' restrictions. The veteran recon mission I was trying to do is hard because you have to use a gun that's only available to the guys who suck in the first place (vs the specialists). They have a couple of points in each skill area and I can only assign 2 or 3 more.

Skill points appear to really only be relevant for the campaign. Quick missions give you a few points to distribute as you like, but nothing is saved once the mission is over. I thought the idea was that once you build up a good sniper in the campaign, you'll be able to take him through a hard recon quick mission, since he would now have the skills to survive. That doesn't seem to be the case (although it makes more sense to me).

I may start playing online more now. I've been so wrapped up in the single player game that I haven't really bothered playing online. The mission modes I can handle, but I don't think I'll bother too much with recon and firefights in single player.

How funny, I ran into this same exact thing last night. I beat it on recruit and deleted the campaign since I planned on moving on to the tougher ones, then I see I am starting all over. I thought I had screwed up by deleting my recruit stuff but I guess not.

gromit, after i made the post, i realized i made a mistake. you are right when you unlock a solider in any campaign mission, and he is yours in any quick mission. and the points are exclusive to the campaign level you earn them on.

for some reason, i think if you finish the game, then play the quick missions, it remebers your points... in fact i am almost certain. i am going to finish the last level again, and see if the points change.

if you lose a soldier in a quick mission he is not gone forever. if you lose a soldier in a campaign he is gone for the campaign.

the manual does indeed suck, bigtime, doesnt explain the medal system (during campaign mode) or the cheats, what are paper, chicken for?

========
i dont have broadband. i have spent most of my time playing the quick missions. i managed to complete 48/50 tasks. i havent finished the game on recruit/elite yet, just veteran... twice, cause the first time i didnt realize what the "x" objectives gave me.

i agree, some of the quick missions are hard, especially the ones w/ restricted guns.

although, i am in love with the M98, every quick mission (except the ones with requirements) i have completed with no other team members or teams.

it was hard, but i enjoyed the challenge. the hardest one is level 14 w/ the m24 on recon.

receon is kinda fun, i didnt realize how close you can get to an enemy until i started playing recon.

It definately remembers your dossier, so all of your objectives are retained even if you overwrite your campaign save.

I'm pretty sure that the points I assigned during the recruit campaign aren't there for the quick missions. I had the last sniper specialist bumped way up and he/she is back to more reasonable numbers now.

I love the game, I'm just kind of scratching my head about some stuff. Some of it probably makes sense, I'm just not aware of the details ($#^& manual). Other stuff seems like it could've been better. I think they should've linked the campaign to the quick missions more. A neat way to get past a hard quick mission would be to play a few more missions on the elite campaign, improving specific soldiers until they are better equipped to handle the quick mission. Oh well, minor complaint considering how the rest of the game turned out.

Now I'm confused about something. I just read IGNPS2's review of Ghost Recon (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/379/379905p1.html) and they absoultely trashed the gameplay. They compare the PS2 version to the PC version but don't mention the Xbox version. Now, I'd like to know if the review of the PS2 version accurately reflects the gameplay in the Xbox version. If it does, is the gameplay really as bad as the PS2 version's review says? Did IGN's review of the Xbox version just ignore these problems?

I was just wondering that too, Kellehair. The ps2 review rips ghost recon apart for some reason, but it doesn't seem like the xbox version is any different gameplay wise from what I could tell. Therefore, either online play gave other reviewers boners over the xbox version, or this ps2 reviewer just hates ghost recon in general.

He seemed to like the PC version though. The PC version is one of my favorite PC games too.

I was going to ask this exact same question. Does anyone know if the x-box version is like the ps2 version? I was thinking about picking this up on x-box but if it's as bad as this ps2 reviewer says it is then maybe I won't.

I wouldn't trust this review, it's a really cool game. Trust the IGN review. Do you have Live? For that alone, it's worth it.

Trust the IGN review.
They're both IGN reviews. That's why this is especially confusing.

The on-screen HUD is very different, based on the screenshots I've seen (Xbox vs PS2).

I'm not sure why they would change that, but maybe other aspects of the game changed as well?

I have live. Does the x-box version have three teams or two?

Has anyone found an faq where it explains the medals, strengths and weaknesses of various weapons, etc?

I've been looking, but I can't find a FAQ.

I may have been confused, but I love this game. I'm in the middle of a quick mission that will unlock the final 'unlockable weapon'. After that, I guess it's the different game modes to unlock. The missions in elite are hard, but not impossible. I have to work on elite recon and firefights though.

Since I have all of the weapons now, I want to play online more.

I love sending each team to different doors of a small building. Shooting bad guys in the back of the head when they've turned to take on my other team is just too cool.

Aren't all the guns already unlocked for the online version from the start?

nope. you can not use any "unlocked" persons online but you can use "unlocked" weapons online. For instance, a fun sniper rifle is the M98 which makes a really nice sound when you fire it. hope to see some of you guys online

Awwwww, I thought I had accomplished something by unlocking the weapons. Geez, that another thing that I think they missed. Online play should be limited to the default weapons unless you've unlocked the goodies.

Gromit-

you did accomplish something because you can now use the unlocked weapons when you play on XBL. Those who did not unlocked them yet will not have access to them online yet.

Interesting. So how much playtime does it take to unlock all the weapons?

I notice you can enter in cheat codes, can that unlock weapons at all?
