Buying books from UK rather than US
Is it really less expensive to buy books from the UK and have them shipped here? A $40 book on Amazon.com will cost me $28.37 including all shipping from Amazon.co.uk. Furthermore, it is still listed as "not yet published" on Amazon.com, but ships in 2-3 days from the UK.
What am I missing?

You can read British books 4% faster and the fonts are higher resolution.
Seriously:
1) Books are published at different dates in different countries.
2) You may wish to try Australian booksellers eg Dymocks. Due to the fact that the Aussie dollar is cactus, it may be cheaper still (although not if Amazon is using the title as a 50% off loss leader).
3) Also try Amazon.ca.

3) Also try Amazon.ca.

Amazon.ca took the $40 US price and converted it to Canadian dollars. So same price as Amazon.com.
Dymochs came out to $47.80 for the book before shipping.
So unless anyone has a horror story, or something I'm missing, I'm gonna order it from the UK.

I've had no trouble with international orders, at least from large companies. I've bought books from WHSmith (UK) and Amazon.co.uk, and games from El Corte Ingles (Spain). Paid for them by credit card, which took care of the currency conversion (for a 2% fee IIRC, which doesn't bother me), and got things relatively promptly.

I purchase lots of books from the U.K. There are many terrific authors in Great Britain whose works are not being published in the U.S., or the U.S. waits for a year or so to publish some titles. The prices are not bad, either, even when you factor in shipping.
Be aware that the book will probably look different than the U.S. printing.

I've bought a few books from Amazon.co.uk, and had no problems. Good prices, and shipping is surprisingly quick.

I bought 5 or 6 textbooks from amazon UK and other UK sites over the past couple of semesters. Amazon UK arrived quicker than expected, and most of them took about a week to arrive (not that I would read the book within the first 3 months anyway). Go ahead and order them.
