Today's CDs (12/3)

Elvis Costello - When I Was Cruel
V/A - Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas
V/A - Rough Guide to Cuban Son
U2 - Best of 1990-2000 / B-Sides

Question of the Day -- What's the best concert you ever went to for an artist you didn't really know before you went?

For me, my college roommate got me to go to Buddy Guy -- some girl ditched him and he was stuck with the extra ticket -- the night after we saw Eric Clapton. I'd never heard Guy, only knew that Clapton thought he was great. Clapton put on an OK show in a giant basketball arena; Buddy Guy put on a great show in a cramped little club.

Unwoud -- A Single History
Gang of Four -- Peel Sessions
Thomas Fehlmann -- Visions of Blah

QOTD: The Prosaics, a NYC band that I saw open for 90 Day Men earlier this year. I was astounded by their performance (very reminiscent of Mission of Burma) and talked to their bassist (Josh) afterwards. I asked him for a CD, and he shocked me by saying that this was only their second show. I've seen them many more times since, and their debut (which they are currently recording) will be a stunner, for sure.

Helms - McCarthy
Portishead - self-titled

I had only heard one song by both Do Make Say Think and Fly Pan Am, however I went because I knew they were on Constellation Records and I wanted to go to an all instrumental show. Ended up being my best concert ever.

Going to see Interpol on Friday though, so I'm hoping that its a real treat.

When you see Interpol, make sure you go early to see Calla. My favorite contemporary band, by far.

Q of the Day:
Kerosene 454 in late '97 or early '98 - I don't even remember the headliner of that show, but it doesn't matter.

Just bought some $.69 CDs:

A Minor Forest - Inindependence

Shudder to Think - Pony Express Record (always meant to check this out)

Echo and the Bunnymen - Live in Liverpool

Got in the mail yesterday a new UK magazine from XFM radio that came with a quite interesting CD, that I listened to this afternoon, most interesting song a cover of Kylie Monogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" performed by The Flaming Lips

new (London) Suede single "Obsessions" with a great b-side song "Cool Thing" that begs to answer the question why does the album sound like crap and songs like this one are left off??

That is the Flaming Lips Radio Sessions cd isn't it? I reviewed that and didn't like it a whole lot. I liked the covers of Knives Out and (I think it was called) White Christmas, but otherwise it bored me. I'll just pop in Yoshimi. What'd you think of it?

The Lips cover "Can't Get You Out of My Head?" That's such an amazing song... Kylie is wonderful.

And Mike: A Minor Forest and Shudder to Think for $.69??? That's amazing. Two absolutely incredible records. I've never heard an album that sounds like Pony Express Record... You'll hate it at first, and then it will suddenly hit you. Also, after Inindependance kicks your ass, make sure to find their song "So Jesus Was At the Last Supper."

Ooh, okay. Its probably the same cut though, I think I recognize Xfm from the cd. But I could be wrong.

I wanted to also add that I saw an incredible show tonight by two bands I'd never heard of: French Kicks and Denali. They came on campus and I'd never heard anything by either, but some friends told me that they thought I'd love Denali. Both bands were very good though, and it was worth every bit of time.

Denali is a band made up of several members of Engine Down, a good emo/hardcore band from Harrisonburg. Their singer is the guitarist's sister.

French Kicks are from here in NYC. Standard bar band.

Denali are very cool. I like about half of their album a whole lot and they promise a lot for the future.

I think one of the members is also in Sleepytime Trio. I like all three of the bands.

I took a whole roll of film and told the bands I would email them once I got to a scanner. Maybe I'll post some of the better ones up here as well.

Scavengers is great. Read the AMG review for an astute description. Their next one, Televise, out in January, should garner a fair amount of attention. A much fuller sound for them.

You are totally right about the Shudder to Think album - I didn't care for it at first, but after 5-6 spins it's really starting to hit me. The A Minor Forest album is enjoyable too, but I haven't listened to it very much yet.
