I didn't watch it, but some of the heads on Fox News, I believe, were talking about it today--apparently Chevy is kinda, well, a jerk in person, and has burned many bridges behind him; they said virtually no one you might expect to be there was [old cast from SNL, etc.] I always liked him, at least as an actor.
But yeah, I would tend to agree with LBP on this one; as far as I can tell, the 'guest of honor' stands there and gets insulted/cursed at for an hour. It'd be one thing if it were funny, but the last one I watched part of wasn't even that. Again, I didn't watch Chevy's, so it could be different.

Watching it right now. Not very good so far. The editing job is horrible. Where is Jeffery Ross, he usually is the only that makes this worth while.
Just finished watching it, that was bad. I knew the guy was a tool but Laraine Newman was the only one who showed up from the original cast of SNL. Paul Schaeffer was terrible to, to bad they couldn't muzzle him, that laugh was getting on my nerves.

I liked the roast of Drew Carey and Jerry Stiller. I only saw half of this, and it was just passable from what I saw.

It was one of the funniest things I've seen on TV in a long time. The whole idea of "roasts" is nothing more than to exhibit stand-up comedy at the expense of someone else -- there's nothing special about it.
This one was great, and what made it greater was that Chevy was noticeably irritated by all the drug jokes and career-ending decisions.
Sample: (some guy, don't know who):
I think that's funny! (Of course, with stand-up, it's all in the delivery. ) To each his own, but if you haven't checked it out, I suggest you do. The whole "3 Amigos Two" thing was funny as hell too with Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Also, the reason there weren't THAT many people there was because he's done it before, but more likely because he's a jerk and everyone think's he's a chauvenistic a$$. I think most of the SNL cast sided with Murray in the whole Murray-Chevy fight.
As for Paul Shaffer, he did a damn good job, and his opening act was pretty genius for a writer/musician.

Nothing special. Schaffer's opening was pretty good, Todd Barry was funny, and Steve Martin is a comic GOD. Other than that, kinda dull, really.
Oh, Stephen Colbert was okay, too.

Back in the day of the Dean Martin roasts, true legends like Frank Sinatra, Jackie Gleason, Lucille Ball, etc. were the guests of honor. Today they give us insignificant hacks like Jerry Stiller and Chevy Chase.

I loathe Chevy Chase for the simple reason that he made "Fletch". That was one of the worst comedies of all time, yet there were always jerks in college who had to quote it INCESSENTLY whenever they had a few beers. It was more annoying than geeks who quote Monty Python scenes in fake British accents.

Here's a great NY Observer article about the Chevy Chase roast:

It was worth watching. I'm not really why a few people don't understand the point of mocking another comedian...it's done all the time in our day to day lives with our friends. We always jab people in good natured ways. It's just a part of growing together and showing respect for others. If you're always complimenting someone and telling them how wonderful they are it won't be long before you lose a friend and just become a boring cheerleader for them.
That aside, Steven Colbert was hilarious. He is really too cool. I sort of wish that Frank (whatever his last name) from the Daily Show had also gotten to speak. But Colbert's last part was brilliant.

Did someone say Fletch is one of the worst comedies of all time? WOW. That's pretty harsh...It's good to know that someone who quotes from a movie you don't like is a "jerk", I'll pick my quotes carefully .
