RUSH's "Caress of Steel"...Underrated or Rush Low Point?

Although Geddy says when he looks back he thinks the album wasn't that great, while listening to it this morning on the way home from work I realized how much I love this RUSH album.

The 1st 3 songs are simply toe tappin' fun and I found myself on the 405 at 6:15a singin' along and having a great time

The rest of it is no less interesting. Moody 70's stuff to the max.

1. Bastille Day
2. I Think I'm Going Bald
3. Lakeside Park
4. The Necromancer: I. Into The Darkness/II. Under The Shadows/III. Return Of Prince
5. The Fountain Of Lamneth: I. In The Valley/II. Didacts And Narpets/III. No One At The Bridge/...

Think I'm Going Bald

I looked in the mirror today
My eyes just didn't seem so bright
I've lost a few more hairs
I think I'm going bald

I think I'm going bald

Seems like only yesterday
We would sit and talk of dreams all night
Dreams of youth
And simple truths
Now we're so involved
So involved with life

Walk down vanity fair
Memory lane everywhere
Wall Street shuffles there
Dressed in flowing hair

Once we loved the flowers
Now we ask the price of the land
Once we would take water
But now it must be wine
Now we've been
And now we've seen
What price peace of mind

Take a piece of my mind

My life is slipping away
I'm aging every day
But even when I'm grey
I'll still be grey my way

What do you think?

One of my top 5 favorite Rush albums. The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth rule! (the first side of the album is okay (especially Lakeside and Bastille), but I've always loved the epic fantasy Rush much more)

As an early Rush fan (at least up to'82) I would concur this might be the worst thing they did up to "Signals".

Always been one of my favorite Rush albums. Definately underrated. How can you not be blown away by "The Necromancer"?

Of all my Rush CD's this album has the least wear and tear. I'm not really impressed with any of the songs other than Bastille Day. However from time to time I pop this album in, take a listen and don't mess with it again for another two years.

The best thing about this album is the story about it's cover. The album cover was going to be a silver cover and not bronze but they printed out 1000 t-shirts and accidentally put the bronze cover on them. Instead of scrapping 1000 t-shirts they simply changed the cover.

Think about it, why would a album called "Caress of Steel" have a bronze cover???? I bet some of you didn't know that.

I haven't given this Rush album enough spins yet to chime in on this one. Too much Rush, too little time.

Now if ya want to start a discussion on Signals...

Greetings!

The Necromancer

Words and Music by Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart

I. Into Darkness

As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky, the three
travelers, men of Willow Dale, emerge from the forest
shadow. Fording the River Dawn, they turn south,
journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of the
Necromancer. Even now the intensity of his dread power
can be felt, weakening the body and saddening the heart.
Ultimately they will become empty, mindless spectres,
stripped of will and soul. Only their thirst for freedom
gives them hunger for vengeance...

Silence shrouds the forest
As the birds announce the dawn
Three trav'llers ford the river
And southward journey on
The road is lined with peril
The air is charged with fear
The shadow of his nearness
Weighs like iron tears

II. Under the Shadow

Shreds of black cloud loom in overcast skies. The
Necromancer keeps watch with his magic prism eyes. He
views all his lands and is already aware of the three
helpless invaders trapped in his lair...

Brooding in the tower
Watching o'er his land
Holding ev'ry creature
Helplessly they stand
Gaze into his prisms
Knowing they are near
Lead them to the dungeons
Spectres numb with fear
They bow defeated

III. Return of the Prince

Enter the Champion.
Prince By-Tor appears to battle for freedom from chains
of long years. The spell has been broken...the Dark Lands
are bright, the Wraith of the Necromancer soars away...in
the night.

Stealthily attacking
By-Tor slays his foe
The men are free to run now
From labyrinths below
The Wraith of Necromancer
Shadows through the sky
Another land to darken
With evil prism eye...

While I feel that I Think I'm Going Bald was one of their most forgettable songs, the rest of the album more than made up for that particular tune.

Great early Rush CD

I don't think it is a bad album, just sounds a bit dated. Necromancer and Lamneth are great tunes, so I wouldn't say "low point". I tend to prefer their late 70's work the most up through Exit Stage Left. Permanent Waves is my favorite album overall. I personally feel that 1986-1990 was Rush's low point. There are a few tunes I enjoyed from that era, but Power Windows, Hold Your Fire and Presto are the loneliest Rush discs in my collection. I thought Roll the Bones was great, Counterparts was pretty average, and Test for Echo was great too.
