Best Song used in a Movie?
What's your Favorite Song that was used in a film?,preferably a song that was already out before the movie was made which wasn't made exclusively for the film-(e.g... NOT "Lose Yourself" from 8 Miles)-but just preferably so.........
Mines and the reason it inspired me to make this thread:
PETER GABRIEL's IN YOUR EYES for Say Anything!
Woo-Hoo!!That song just got me in a Total state of AWE when
it was used in the film.
Just seen the film recently for the first time and it will definitely
go down as my top 10 films of All-Time!! and that song surely played a major role.

I don't know why exactly, but the "Tiny Dancer" bus scene in Almost Famous is just perfect and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.....there's actually a few songs in there that do it for me, but that is the one that sticks out.
Honorable mention goes to "Let's Get it On" and "I Believe" from "High Fidelity".....good stuff.....

But playing by the rules: I'll agree with bgills. Not only is Tiny Dancer a great song but its used perfectly in Almost Famous.

I don't why, but I've always had an affinity for Head over Heals (tears for fears) as used in Donnie Darko.
Turn! turn! Turn! in Forrest Gump as Jenny pulls away in the bus and flashes the peace sign. it just fit very nicely.

Some of my favorite use of existing songs in films
Patriot Games: "Theme from Harry's Game" by Clannad
Almost Famous: "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John (one more in agreement )
Mulholland Drive: "Llorandro" spanish language remake of "Crying" by Roy Orbison
Trainspotting: "Lust for Life" by Iggy Pop
Muriel's Wedding: "Dancing Queen" by ABBA
The Virgin Suicides: "Magic Man" by Heart
Moulin Rouge: "Your Song" by Elton John
Reservoir Dogs: "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Steelers Wheel (if memory serves me right, the soundtracks' in the car ) and "Little Green Bag" in the opening credits
Not a song but classical tunes:
Piano Trio in E Flat by Schubert used effectively in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and Tony Scott's The Hunger
Carmina Burana by Orff in John Boorman's Excalibur

The best answers to this question are instances where a good song is used almost as a character in a good film instead of simply as a backdrop, or as something to play over white on black credits.
Tiny Dancer in Almost Famous, In Your Eyes in Say Anything, Llorandro in Mullholland Drive, and several ABBA songs in Muriel's Wedding certainly qualify.

Also have to add:
Zeppelin's Tangerine in Almost Famous. Worked out really well.
Aimee Mann's "One" at the beginning of Magnolia
And many many songs in Boogie Nights. PTA made some fantastic choices of songs, and really fit them in nicely.

All of the songs used in the drug deal scene in Boogie Nights; possibly the best stand alone scene I have EVER seen in a movie.
God Moving Over the Face of Water- end of Heat
...and while it is a TV series, I would have to vote for the uses of both Tiny Tears and Thru and Thru in The Sopranos.

I always enjoy the old Irish folk song, Garry Owen, in the film - They Died With Their Boots On. I certainly feel that it qualifies - as mentioned by DVDTalker JustinS - as a character in the film.
The Theme from Carmen in The Bad News Bears
(Round Her Neck) She Wore a Yellow Ribbon in the film She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
And I'm drawing a blank on this one, but how about the song Auld Lang Syne, I know it's been used in numerous films, in which film do you think it was used most effectively?

As well, Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine at the end of the Matrix is pretty fitting.

There are so many great ones.
I'll mention Wonderful World (Don't Know Much) by Sam Cooke as used in Witness. My favorite romantic scene in any movie.

Of the past year, Zappa's "Watermelon in Easter Hay" over the closing credits of "Y Tu Mama Tambien" was the most striking. I love FZ, but I don't think you need to be a fan to grasp the utter melancholy that fills this exquisite instrumental (and how appropiate it is to the end of this film).

I wanted to add:
Magic Carpet Ride from Go! Perfectly sequenced as the car chase gets going in Vegas....all of the music is very well done in that film, but that in particular is a stellar moment.
The mention of Carmina Burana for Excalibur is an excellent one too, and of course brings to mind The Ride of the Valkyries from Apocolypse Now.....
And one more honorable mention for Street Life in Jackie Brown - that song IS Pam Grier....good show ole chap, good show!!

But the best use of any song in any movie is La Marseillaise in Casablanca.
