Steve Martin to Host Oscars

The Tao of Steve

Here's who'll host the Oscars. Steve Martin, the wild and crazy-turned-cool and urbane host of two years ago, gets to emcee the diamond-anniversary Academy Awards
by Gary Susman Ew.com

Next spring's Academy Awards will be the diamond-anniversary edition, with 75 years worth of clips and nostalgia -- in other words, it'll surely run even longer than usual.

Fortunately, the Academy has picked a host whose quick wit should keep things moving: Steve Martin. He's an Oscar show veteran, having emceed two years ago and served as a presenter six times. ''I'm very pleased to be hosting the Oscars again, '' Martin said in a statement, ''because fear and nausea always make me lose weight.''

Martin has other reasons to feel excited and apprehensive besides the March 23 ceremony. His comedy with Queen Latifah, ''Bringing Down the Houze,'' will mark his first screen appearance in more than a year when it opens next spring. In January, he starts filming ''Shopgirl,'' based on his own novella, with costars Claire Danes and Jimmy Fallon. That's the movie Saks Fifth Avenue security guards testified that Winona Ryder said she was auditioning for when they stopped her for shoplifting. Expect a joke or two about that at the Oscars.

Word to that. Steve Martin is a funny guy and I look forward to watching him post. (As long as it is not up against the Sopranos)

Steve Martin is a great choice. He has been the best Oscar host since Billy Crystal. Whoopi is just horrible, and I can't understand how she made it past hosting once.

I believe the current The Sopranos season will be over by the time of the Oscar ceremonies next March.

HBO actually caught a lot of flak from many people for scheduling a new episode of The Sopranos opposite the Oscars one year; I think HBO won't do THAT again with running one of their popular TV series opposite the Oscars.

I'm happy with the choice. I think the only one who's done a better job hosting an awards show was Conan, and that was mostly because of the taped bits they did ahead of time.

I think Conan might get a shot at the Oscars eventually, but he has to get more name recognition first. Hopefully he'll do the Emmies at least a couple more times, or maybe the Grammies.

I was talking about a new season (or more like hoping it won't be over a year wait like last time )

I don't know I thought he just looked awkward up there during the last awards show he hosted. I love his show, but it's like he doesn't know how to carry himself in front of a crowd like that. He was pacing like a madman.

He does that during the monologue. Watch him closely some time. He doesn't "pace" but he moves back and forth alot. I think that's just his thing.
