The Track List For Nirvana's Greatest Hits Album - Who SELECTED THESE?!?!?

I just found the track listing for Nirvana's Greatest Hits album:

You Know You're Right
About A Girl
Been A Son
Sliver
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Come As You Are
Lithium
In Bloom
Heart-Shaped Box
Pennyroyal Tea
Rape Me
Dumb
All Apologies
The Man Who Sold The World

Ok, so that's what...14 tracks? You've got to be kidding me. A band like Nirvana deserves no less than 17 QUALITY tracks. Whoever assembled this must have a screw loose.

There are of course a few songs that could not possibly be forgotten on this album, including:

Smells Like Teen Spirit
Come As You Are
Lithium
Heart-Shaped Box
All Apologies
Sliver

But those are the only ones that I would argue should DEFINETLY be on the greatest hits album. The few that have been included that I would have included are:

Pennyroyal Tea
In Bloom

But other than those, I find this greatest hits collection to be a joke! A few of the songs have NOOOO business whatsoever being on this album (Been A Son and Dumb, my absolute least favorite Nirvana song of all time) and The Man Who Sold The World wasn't even a Nirvana SONG! Throw in to the mix that the original version of About A Girl wasn't all that great to begin with and we have a collection of bum tracks alongside the greatest songs ever written by Nirvana. Seriously, we have 6 all time legend songs, 2 great songs, a couple of sloppy songs, a few songs that HAVE no business being on the album, and one new song that I think is highly overrated. Sick.

How would your greatest hits selection go? Name 15 tracks (one more than Miss LOVE did....beeyitch) that you would have included on your Nirvana Greatest Hits Album. Mine are as follows:

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
2. Come As You Are
3. Lithium
4. Heart Shaped Box
5. All Apologies
6. Sliver
7. In Bloom
8. Pennyroyal Tea

Those are the songs that really are on the cd, now the remaining tracks that I would have included:

9. Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle
10. Dive
11. Stain
12. Aneurysym
13. Breed
14. About A Girl (accoustic version)
and 15. Territorial Pissings

How these songs were excluded we may never know for sure, but I am thinking it might have something to do with them not wanting TOO many songs from one single album...but who cares? The bottom line is that there are no Nirvana Fans in the world who are buying this cd because they want a collection of their best hits....we already have their albums in their entireity. Everyone's buying this album for that ONE new song. I call it a crock.

Package Nevermind as the greatest hits album to end all other greatest hits album and I'll buy it. I still feel that's the greatest album ever recorded.

Problem with these songs is... THEY'RE NOT GREATEST HITS

HITS being the operative word -- ie: chart success, singles.

Do not confuse a "greatest hits" album with a "best of" album -- very different

Guesswho is right. These are their greatest hits. I would have liked to have seen at least 1 more song from Bleach on there. Probably Big Cheese since, if I'm not mistaken, it was originally released as a single.

It doesn't really matter anyway. This CD is just for the casual Nirvana fan, not the hardcore one. The hardcore fan already has all of the CDs anyway, and these are the only songs that the casual fan cares about anyway.

I'm not spending any money on it, so I don't have a real problem with it.

While I agree, that for the most part, it's for the casual Nirvana fan... i think anyone who is actually a HARDCORE nirvana fan will go out and by this anyway, just to have "You Know You're Right" on disc... I know I am buying the record just for that song... I'm sure that's why it doesn't matter what else was on it really...for me it comes down to one track...

Does anybody know if "You Know You're Right" will be released as a single (domestic US or import)?

It pains me to hear that song and think about what may have been had Kurt stayed with us. It's a damn fine piece of work.

According to the Internet Nirvana Fan Club home page, there will be no "You Know You're Right" single:

Concerning the Greatest Hits album:

"A few more details should be noted; there will not be any singles promoting the album. There were rumors of a You Know You're Right single but this will not happen, unfortunately. Only a 1-track promo CD of the song has been compiled and sent to radio stations. And then, of course, there is the music video. I believe the tracklisting will be the same all around the world except, as noted earlier, the European release will have 15 tracks instead of 14 (adding Where Did You Sleep Last Night as a bonus)."

There's a lot more info on the mix and the packaging of the Hits album at this URL:

Intenet Nirvana Fan Club

P.S. "Pay to Play" would have been a nice addition to the disc. Oh well, here's hoping the boxed set (coming out in 2003) just heaps on the rarities.

What's the big deal about a hits collection? Doesn't anyone who likes Nirvana want the albums anyway? Don't get it...

So did you not see "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the track listing in the first post, Mr. Observant?

I'm boycotting this release anyway, I have all the albums and I'll wait for the box set rather than play into Love's greedy clutches by buying this for one song I don't have...

According to the latest issue of Rolling Stone (women of rock cover) the box set isn't coming out until 2004.

Hmmm, well... they've waited this long so I guess another two years won't really matter but, shoot, the wait is really frustrating after all the hype

I want my Nirvana!

Yes, Nevermind was never a very good album to begin with.

Nirvana runs just under fifty minutes. And while some of the other songs that have been mentioned weren't "hits", frankly, neither were about half of the songs already on it. They could have very easily put another 20-25 minutes on it if they wanted to, but for whatever reason, they didn't.

That they're not putting out a single for "You Know You're Right" should be obvious.

If I even bothered to play mine anymore, I'd do the same thing. Actually, if it's on sale cheap enough, I could unload Nevermind and In Utero and probably make a profit. Hmmmm...

They should've named this album "Cash Cow" or "Piggy Bank."

(I believe that's what Kurt Cobain wanted to call "In Utero.")

Anyone remember a song called "verse...chorus...verse" from a cd called No Alternitaive. That got some heavy airplay in NY and probably everywhere else. I think they should have included that track on here. Also "something in the way", and "Even in his youth" would have been nice

I'd buy a single of this, but I'm not going to buy the whole album.

Not justifying downloading or anything, but having just one (or two, if you count pennyroyal tea) new song(s) kind of encourages people to download the one or two songs they want.

THIS IS FROM: BILLBOARD.COM

"Universal Music Group's self-titled Nirvana greatest hits set, which was moved from its original Nov. 12 release date to today (Oct. 29), is being issued in three different configurations worldwide. Outside North America the set features the bonus track "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" from Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged in New York" album. "Something in the Way," from the same set, will be a bonus track included on the Japanese version only."
