PAL DVD's: always squished on NTSC TV?

Okay, I'm fairly techno savvy and am aware of some of the PAL to NTSC issues, but her's my problem:

it seems that with most of the PAL DVD' s that I play on my muti-region player - with an NTSC TV - I end up with an image that squished a little.

I believe PAL is a slightly different aspect ratio, BUT does that mean every cinefile that collects international DVD's is tolerating a funky image or is there something basic I'm missing?

here's what I got:

region free APEX , PAL switchable
NTSC Panasonic

I live in the USA.

Any input is appreciated.

APEX just removes every couple of lines to downconvert from PALs higher vertical resolution to fit your NTSC TV.

Anamorphic PAL discs will look way to big and squished if you try to play them on your APEX.

Check the Malata and Beyond Malata threads here ( i mean c'mon there are like 3,333,213,312 topics about this just this month!!!)
