Report: Korean Man Dies After 86 Hours of Nonstop Gaming
By: Christian Nutt October 9, 2002 3:41 PM PDT
According to Independent Online, a 24 year old South Korean man was found dead after an 86-hour gaming session at an internet cafe.
The man had apparently been "glued" to his computer for several days, stopping neither for meal or rest breaks. He passed out but regained consciousness. He was later found dead in a restroom.
Online PC gaming at internet cafes is exceptionally popular in South Korea. Customer service is obviously optional.

The reporters name is Christian Nutt?
sorry that I didn't have anything of substance to add.
Though it is sad that someone dies after 86 hours of non-stop gaming. I wonder if there were some other problems that weren't reported on...

BATON ROUGE, LA. A Louisiana woman is suing Nintendo, alleging her 30-year-old son suffered seizures after playing video games for eight hours a day, six days a week.
The lawsuit filed in federal court says the man died last year after hitting his head and mouth on a table during one of the seizures. It claims the man never had seizures before buying a Nintendo-64 player in 1999.
His mother is seeking unspecified damages for her own medical and funeral expenses, for mental and emotional anguish, and for her son's lost future earnings.
A spokesman for Nintendo is declining comment on the lawsuit. In court records, the company denies any wrongdoing.

Well this is karma sort of. I've been making fun of my wife(east indian) for the indian man who died from the salt eating contest. Now a Korean(I'm south korean) dies from video games, one of my hobbies.

from the AP wire
Seoul, South Korea - A 24-year-old South Korean man died after playing computer games nonstop for 86 hours, said police on Wednesday.
The jobless man, identified by police only by his last name Kim, was found dead on Tuesday at an Internet cafe in Kwangju, 260km south-west of Seoul, they said.
Quoting witnesses, police detective Oh Myong-sik in Kwangju said the man had been virtually glued to the computer since late on Friday and had no decent sleep and meals.
The man collapsed in front of the counter desk but soon regained his consciousness. He then went to the toilet where he was found dead, said the police officer.
An initial investigation ruled out the possibility of murder, said police.
South Korea is among the world's most Internet-savvy nations with more than half of its 47 million people having access to the Internet. South Korea has about 22 000 Internet cafes, also known as PC rooms.

News like this only blames games and not the real source. I really wouldn't doubt he was using drugs.

Yeah I think there was another guy in Korea last year who died in the same way. That's just crazy.
I'm not interested in anything enough to do it for 86 straight hours.

You guys are missing the point here. We can take this tragedy and make something good out of it. We are forgetting the most important question: What was he playing?
Whatever is that good needs to be on my hard drive.

Me and four of my friends played Goldeneye for five days straight back in 1999, we would play four players and one person who lost first sat out the next round, I officially play myself nonstop( only about a total break time of an hour) for 3 days straight, then I lost but we were sitting on a black leather couch and when I lost and I stood up to go take a piss my legs were black from the leather sticking to my legs from sweating so much. After we were totally done playing we started on a Sunday at around 2:00pm and finsihed Friday at around 5 or 6 pm, I went home and slept from 7pm Friday till 3am Sunday morning and actually had to go on antibiotics because I got so sick!
AHHH the great days of gaming with no job and no school(summerbreak) now when I read this I realized that I was pretty stupid ( ok I knew before I read this that I am stupid)
