Actress Teri Garr Reveals She Has MS

'Tootsie' Star Says She's Had Disease For 19 Years
Posted: 3:46 p.m. EDT October 8, 2002

Academy Award-nominated actress Teri Garr is going public with her multiple sclerosis.

Garr, 51, is holding a news conference Wednesday in New York to reveal that she's had symptoms of multiple sclerosis for 19 years.

The actress says she never told anyone because she "didn't want pity." She was also afraid no one would hire her.

Garr was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the comedy "Tootsie," where she played Dustin Hoffman's jilted girlfriend.

She's also appeared in such film comedies as "Young Frankenstein," "Mr. Mom" and "Dumb & Dumber," and television shows such as "M*A*S*H," "Murphy Brown," "Spin City" and "Friends."

Garr is now being paid by a group that helps people with MS.

This is sad. The article is confusing with that last sentence. Does this mean that she is being supported financially by this group?

In August, several major drug companies were criticized in a New York Times piece that revealed that some celebrities had been promoting the benefits of their medications on the talk-show circuit without acknowledging they had been paid to do so. The Times reported that news outlets like CNN would in the future reveal when such guests were being paid. It is not known whether such a policy prompted MS Lifelines to acknowledge that Garr was "a paid ambassador."

Sad to hear that. I liked her in The Conversation and Close Encounters.

Really sad to hear this news.

She was one of my favorites in the 80's.

It's scary when you see what it has done to Richard Pryor and others.

My father was diagnosed with this less than a year ago, but when he thinks back to all his aches and pains over the years, he thinks he's had it for ten years.

Sad about Garr too.

One of my favorite movies. I used to love her appearances on Letterman too. I'm not really a fan of Friends [OK, I HATE them] but I heard her latest gig is playing Lisa Kudrow's mom. How's she looking nowadays?

I saw her recently on the Hollywood Squares. She looked like an attractive 50ish year old woman that could lose a few pounds. I wish her the best.

Sad news.

To think that she's had symptoms since back around when she made Mr. Mom...

Sorry to hear this. I remember when she used to go on Letterman all the time.

I like her on that show she's on now with Stephanie Miller.

late in arriving at this thread...but still very sad. I guess that would account for her looking not so good in Ghost World.

I saw her in a crowd, ten paces away, in LA back in '86. I was esctatic, as I've been under her spell since the first time I saw Young Frankenstein. She rules - this is sad.

Any Teri Garr thread needs mention of her boozed out wife to Richard Dreyfuss in Let It Ride. Great flick.
