Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy) is the New Friday on 'Dragnet'

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The manhunt is over, "Dragnet" has found a new Joe Friday.

"Marrried With Children" actor Ed O'Neill will be playing the deadpan detective on Dick Wolf's series remake for ABC and Universal Television, according to industry sources. He will replace Danny Huston, who left the show after filming the first episode, which wrapped Sept. 30. Production on the show will resume on Friday, Oct. 11.

"I'm delighted that Ed will be playing Joe Friday on 'Dragnet,'" Wolf said in a statement. "Ed and I have been trying to find something to do together for several years, and I believe this will be a great meld of actor and material."

O'Neill will be reunited with "Dutch" costar Ethan Embry, who plays Friday's partner Detective Frank Smith. In addition to the John Huges film, he has starred in such features as "The Bone Collector" and "Lucky Numbers." His last lead television role was in the cop drama "The Big Apple" on CBS.

"Dragnet" is scheduled to premiere in January 2003 on ABC.

This might be interesting. I just might watch.

Al Bundy as a detective. Didn't they already try that in a Married With Chidlren dream epsiode? Sorry, but even though he was convincing as Popeye Doyle in a tv movie, I cannot see him pulling this off.

I think that he can pull it off. Didn't he play a detective of sorts in the David Mamet film "The Spanish Prisoner"? Great movie, BTW...

How about a series with Ed as a deranged fast-food franchise operator?

Ed O'Neill in Stan Mikita's Donuts... coming soon to the WB

As one of the minority that watched and thoroughly enjoyed the few episodes of "The Big Apple", I'll definitely check this out. Is this being played straight, or as comedy? I hope it's the former.

Honk!

Ed O'Neill is actually a really good actor, but like a lot of good actors he got a role on TV that he just NAILED - meaning he ended up stereotyped.

In his early days on TV Ed was often a guest actor playing a heavy on shows like T.J. Hooker. He can easily pull this off.

This sounds VERY interesting....

Will the first episode with Danny Huston ever be aired? Or was it already? Why was he replaced?

Guess I'm full of questions. I think O'Neill is perfect for this role. As others have said, he's a good actor with a lot of range...and he's paid his dues. "Al Bundy" was a pure comedic role, with no room for him to demonstrate his dramatic chops, so I think people who have only seen him in that role are going to be surprised.

I loved that show! Ed's performance on Big Apple actually has me interested in Dragnet, something I otherwise wouldn't care about.
