How do they get the playbooks in football games
Ok, last football game post, I promise.
I bought the NFL 2K3 guidebook yesterday (for a penny!) and it's quite useless. It's full of information, and lists every single offensive and defensive play for each team, along with all the starters, but it doesn't show any diagrams for the plays. Anyway, it got me thinking...
I've heard people say that playing games like Madden and NFL 2K really help them enjoy the real game, and I find that to be true. I'm much more aware of formations and possible plays. But I just find it amazing that these videogame companies are able to put so much into these games. Every player down to the last detail, including approximate size and features, as well as a personal profile for every starter. Every stadium. And they have to spend a lot of their time on the AI. It's way more complicated, IMHO, than any other sport.
But how do they get the playbooks? Just by watching the games? I'm sure the teams don't open up even last year's playbooks so that the programmers can study them. Every team has a different playbook in the game, and how is this determined? Defense is a lot easier than offense, granted. But do they pour over last year's film and choose plays that way?
Overall I'm really impressed with this year's Football games, and I eagerly anticipate the improvements next year.
One last thing... does anyone know if it's possible to allow games between two different systems? Since it's all going to a central server anyway, could we someday have an X-box player go up against a PS2 player?
