Good Philip Glass albums?
I've recently become interested in Philip Glass from seeing some of the movies he's composed scores for, and have been meaning to pick up a Glass CD. Any suggestions on which are best?

I don't know which are his best, but I really enjoy his scores for Powaquatsi and Koyanisquatsi. Please forgive my spelling if it's wrong. I'm doing this from memory.

If you go to his web site, you can listen to samples of a lot of his stuff. For my own part, my favorite Glass film scores are his Kundun and Mishima scores, and the Candyman stuff is nice as well. For non-film work, his violin concerto is available on a budget priced disc from the Naxos label, which features good performances at a great prices (about $6). Also, there is a disc of his music by a South American group called Uakti that is cool. And Circles, a disc of piano music played by Arturo Stalteri, is another one that I like. There is tons of Glass material out there, so your best bet is to sample what you can. Hope that helps.

Ooooh, Philip Glass, he is excellent! Here are my favorites in order of preference:
Music in 12 parts, part 1
Koyaanisqatsi (the new one)
Solo Piano
Two pages, contrary motion, etc.
Glass Organ works
Glassworks
Itaipu/The Canyon
Glass pieces
Dances No. 1-5
Satyagraha (esp. the last act)
Enjoy!

Well I went to the local big-ass music store, and all I could find that interested me was Solo Piano (they didn't have much, especially in the way of his more popular albums). Brought it home, and it's some damn good listenin'. Thanks again. Any similiar albums you'd recommend?

1. "Circles" with Arturo Stalteri, pianos
2. "Glass Organ Works" with Donald Joyce - amazing sounds
3. Steve Reich "Sextet/Six Marimbas" OK, it's not Glass but it's still in the same vien and one of my all time faves

Circles and Glass Organ Works sound great from the samples I've listened to; I'll be sure to pick them up. Can't find this "Sextet/Six Marimbas" anywhere, though. I listened to samples at amazon.com from another one of his albums and they sound interesting.

Just don't listen to the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack in the car. You will fall asleep and crash without the visual inputs of the movie, or something else to occupy your mind.
