What is VAT?

I've noticed the total given to me at amazon.co.uk is listed as "before VAT." And I've also been noticing that items, once I go into the check out process, are lower in price than what they were listed at on the site. Is this something to do with VAT? Not that I am complaining, if I can get the discs cheaper than the list price, every little bit helps, but I was just curious.

VAT = Value Added Tax (a sales tax)

If you're odering from the U.K. for export, the VAT is not charged.
