Criterion's upgraded, anamorphic transfer manages to capture every single bit of grain, dirt, and botched edits

And while none of the three filmmakers (as of this writing) have gone behind the camera again
May be but he did a couple of other odd movies
Les Randonneurs
Les Portes de la Gloire
Le Boulet

i finally got this today from amazon. it is so very nice to have it. the dvd a/v quality doesn't mean much since it needs to look bad and sloppy. however the extras are lacking. a small photo gallery with under or about ten pics, the trailer, a fake trailer that was done as a student project for some spy movie, and lastly and also my biggest gripe a brief interview with the main 3. i never had the LD of this so i guess this is kinda old news but the interview sucks bad. public settings don't seem ideal for an interview and it is hard to hear what is being said with all the background noise. and since they speak french, why are they talking in english, it is obvious that their english is lacking esp for remi, so i don't understand why they didn't speak french and have subtitles for it. how can i grasp what they have to say when they barely know how to say it in english. it just seems that they really had to limit themselves to what english they do know and it seems to lose a lot. i wish they could of spoken in french where they can express everything they want to with no difficulty and then have someone else translate it later. i am assuming that for some reason english was requested by interviewers, i don't know it just bothered me.
i had also never seen the un-rated cut, and after seeing it i wish they had used some branching to choose between the two. the rape scene really felt totally out of place, where as most of the violence had a bit of black humor to, this scene had none and it lingered there for awhile. i wish i could watch the movie without that scene just for the sake of the tone and flow of the movie, as the scene isn't really as graphic or disturbing as i had heard, save for the showing of the aftermath.

I got my copy today and have to disagree with Gsuscryst comments on the intrerview. Yes it was badly filmed and the sound was very crackly, but it gave you a brief insight into the film makers, their humour and the way they set out to make the film, (eg from a proper scrip rather than on the fly)
I havnt watched this movie since its origonal release way back in the day and all that stuck in my memory about it was the killings, but after watching it again, being a bit older and more worldy weary I get a lot more of the humour and subversive messages coming from the film. I was sitting chuckeling through most of the film, Ben really was a likable character, pity about his day job.

MAN BITES DOG Review it's not just for MondoDigital anymore!
I just watched MBD last night for the first time since its theatrical release (I may have actually seen it once more on video in the intervening years), and I laughed my petit derriere off.
Ben is such a deluded, smug, pathetic, narcissistic individual you can't help but to constantly burst out laughing at the carnage of his way-over-the-top exploits. The camera crew's "participation" with Ben is the perfect example of how some documentarians are unable to refrain from adding their viewpoint to a "documentary."
Anyways, here are six more reviews, seven including the MD review. Except for the idiotic review from DVDFile, they're all basically positive.
cheers, Tony Block

As much as I hate to say it, both because of web site brotherhood and because I tend to like most of Mark's other reviews, you're right about the DVDFile article being way off base. I was very disappointed to read that one.

Anyways, what I find even more disturbing about Mr. Keizer's review, much more than his simplistic analysis of Man Bites Dog was this quote:
"The most controversial entry at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival was Gasper Noe's, Irreversible. The film includes a nine-minute rape scene, which plays out in one shot. A woman walking down a pedestrian subway is attacked and violated...for nine minutes, all with no edits. When this ridiculous exercise in attention-grabbing was finished, I yelled "Palme D'Or!" Nobody laughed." (emphasis added)
I find it unbelievable that a film critic --if this story is true-- would YELL during a film. Even if one as a critic, or as a regular Joe spectator, doesn't like a film, you shouldn't ruin the experience for others, who are either enjoying the film, or are deeply engroseed in the experience. However, even in retrospect, this behavior doesn't seemed to have fazed, much less embarrassed Mr. Keizer. In fact, judging from his review, he seems to be proud of his "gotcha" behavior.
Perhaps the Canne's audience silence after his yelling was not in agreement that IRREVERSIBLE was attention grabbing, but rather that Mr. Keizer's YELLING had been.
cheers, Tony Block

Also, I tend to think that Mark was probably exaggerating for effect.

The only place I've seen it so far is Borders. Look in the "Comedy" section. Goes for around $26, I think.

"...you'll learn very little from this piece for the simple reason that these men are nearly unintelligible English speakers. I would have much preferred to listen to them in their native language, with subtitles."
