completely confused about the ps2 adapter ... do i even need it if i'm online?

lost.

i have two computers hooked to a cable modem via a router.

do i need this adapter to go online? i was lurking at some madden forum and kids were saying things about playing tony hawk online before and blablabla ... well ... how'd they get online before? can i just hook up my ps2 to another port on the router?

i don't get it, someone please explain.

you either need the PS2 adapter or a USB one that works with PS2 listed here:

The Sony adaptor will have software to connect to the networks.

I think with the USB adaptors, you have to have software on your computer in order to get it running.

Since they are the same price, I'd get the Sony adaptor. It also comes with a game (Twisted Metal Black: Online).

You'll definitely have a lot easier time with the Sony adapter - support for the USB adapter has to be in the software for it to work. If you really don't want to get the official adapter check ebay, last time I checked (when Tony Hawk 3 came out) there were a bunch of USB->Ethernet adapters going for around $10.

Also, USB is only 12Mbps, while the Sony Adapter is a full 100Mbps when hooked up to a network at that speed. This'll be a factor if lateron you want to take advantage of higher bandwidth content later.
