Best Film of 1968 (ongoing survey)

A quick note:
  • Some people are now saying it's before their time, so they haven't seen enough to vote... If you've seen even one film that you really liked from the year, and thus you consider it the best you've seen (even if it's the only one you've seen), go ahead and vote. Heck, I was born in '82, so yeah, it's before my time too, but I've still got a favorite from most years back at least through the 70s, even if I've just seen 2 or 3 from the year.

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1968 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1968 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

Based on the quality of the films I've been fortunate enough to see from '68, this would be the best year of cinema I know of! Of course I've only seen 3 from the year, but they're all absolutely briliant.

My #1 film of all time, Kubrick's greatest of his many masterpieces gets my vote:

1) 2001: A Space Odyssey - 10/10
2) Rosemary's Baby - 10/10
3) The Odd Couple - 9/10

Unfortunately Siskel and Ebert's lists have run out. If you know of any lists from Pauline Kael or any other respected critic or even publication from '68 or any year farther back, please post them or send me an email.

My vote goes to 2001 and I have no doubt that will win this poll. It's not the masterpiece some claim it is, but it is a pretty cool ride.

I say wait for Monsters Inc to do 2001 poll.

I hope Jon Turner doesn't somehow read your vote as PotA (2001)...

2001, defintiely.

And as for the poll above, I voted "wait for monsters inc". It's not my favorite 2001 movie, but I still love it and it deserves to be an option in the 2001 poll.

Back then, my favorite movie was The Love Bug (I was 6).

In retrospect, that wasn't quite as good as it seemed at the time, so I vote for 2001

hmm, I recommend the films selected by the National Film Registry
Those films can be found listed at this Top Films List site: http://www.filmsite.org/greatlists.html
or more specifically, here:
http://www.filmsite.org/filmreg.html
they are unfortunately arranged by alphabetical order, not by year.

In 1988, the Library of Congress established the National Film Preservation Board to preserve 25 films each year to add to the National Film Registry. As of 2001, there were 325 films selected. The films that are selected must meet two criteria: they must be culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and they must be at least ten years old.

Planet Of The Apes

2001 provided some interesting ideas about space travel - but the film is noticeably lacking in plot and character. IMHO anyway...

A must mention outlandish cult film:

Most hated film of the year:
Barbarella (1968) ~ with Hanoi Jane

This was actually a pretty good year for movies. It's not like the 30's or the 40's but not bad either.~ IMHO

Beware the beast man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him, for he is the harbinger of death.

Get your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!
