Today's CDs (6/3/02)

Uncle Tupelo - "Anthology"
Clinic - "Walking With Thee" (finally borrowed it from a friend - boring)
Slint - "Spiderland"

This installment of "Today's CDs" is mostly an excuse to praise the fine, fine Trail of Dead show I attended a few hours ago. They played a very high-energy set, jumped around in the audience quite a bit, and smashed some equipment at the end. I can't ask for much more. Secret Machines were decent, but not exactly my cup of tea.

"Well, we were going to play one more song but...uh...I guess that's it!" - one of the guitarists for Trail of Dead after the drummer destroyed his drums and knocked over some amps

Richard Hawley - "Late Night Final" (recommended if you like semi-sappy semi-beautiful slow music -- which I apparently do)
Breeders - "Title TK"
Weezer - "Maladroit"

Blackalicious -- Blazing Arrow
El-P -- Fantastic Damage
Sonic Youth -- Murray Street
Flaming Lips -- Yoshii...
Faust -- IV

So Mike, what was it about the Machines that you didn't like?

Found out I'll be interviewing Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips soon. I plan to ask him why they decided to be Mercury Rev Pt. 2 rather than the Flaming Lips.

It just seemed like a few of their songs dragged on for too long. They picked up some steam and played some more upbeat tunes during the second half of their set, but by that point I had tuned out. I'll still check out that album, which I know you are a fan of.

Live they want to be a grittier Spaceman 3. On their record they want to be Pink Floyd. Their renderings live and in the studio sound completely dissimilar. I don't know if I could pick a favorite between them.
