Morrisette's "Hands Clean"

Normally I can't stand the whiny skeez (pipe her crap into Bin Laden's caves and he'd be out within the hour), but her new tune is pretty catchy. Anyone else like it?

I like it as well.

Hopefully the next Alanis single will be "Precious Illusions," another mid-temp track that I think surpassess Hands.

I've heard it was a fling with an unmarried older man when she was underage. I believe she did an interview where she explains the song.

If this is the same "older man" that she's written other songs about -- it's the "Joey" character from Full House.

I think the story is that they met when she was on YCDTOT and he was on some other TV show that was filmed down the hall.

I think I love her. She is one angry lady.

Is this album comparable to JLP?

I've heard it was a different older man..... "Joey" was when she was 18., right after she spent a few years with this much older man whom she started dating when she was underage.

Anyone else noticing a trend?

I just read an interview the other day - otherwise would never even know this story....

Short answer: no

Long answer: I don't think it's fair to compare the two. Will the CD be as successful as JLP? No, but remember what a mammoth JLP turned out to be. People I never even dreamed of liking anything but country music had this album.

Is it as "angry" as JLP? No. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

To me it's just hard to try and compare the two. Since JLP was a huge success and a lot of people loved it, it sort of became the benchmark for her career. Sort of like "Thriller" for Michael Jackson. JLP seemed to hit a nerve and connect with a lot of people. Because of this, anything she has done after that has been judged too harshly, IMO, in JLP's light. It's almost becomes a case of liking JLP more than you actually like Alanis Morissette.

If you like Alanis Morissette, you will like "Under Rug Swept". I would more compare it to "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" more than I would JLP though.

If you liked JLP and didn't buy her last album, you probably won't like "Under Rug Swept".

I meant for this to be more well-stated than it came out. These are just my opinions, and aren't directed at you, kvrdave.

Also, I'm discarding all of Alanis' teeny-bop recordings because I don't think anyone likes her THAT much to own those.

I disagree. I consider it a mix of the two. It is similar to SFIJ lyrically, is musically a mix of both albums, and contains the hook-laden refrains of JLP (i.e., it's much more catchy than SFIJ).

I know fans that adored JLP, skipped SFIJ, and are now back on board with URS.

I am praying that this is NOT the single, although i suppose it will be... why? Cause it's my favourite song on the new album, and if it comes out as a single, will get overplayed and i'll start to get tired of it... and I don't want that to happen!

MATT

used to really like hands clean, now... not so much... please, don't release precious illusions, i like it too much!

I would be one of those. I even think I like URS more than JLP..... but I could also argue that I'm giving this one a lot more of a chance....

I personally think this cd is terrible. Esp compared to her other 2, esp. JLP.

I just feel like she tried to make this more in tune with what is popular, and consequently isn't as good.

Anyone notice the great actor Chris Sarandon making a brief appearance in the video?

I think the track "Hands Clean" is one of her best but as a whole, her new album sucks monkey balls.

I haven't been able to get into this album at all yet, but its release made me go back to SFIJ, and I've fallen in love with that all over again.

Is this the song that sounds like a Rush cover for the first few stanzas?

I had to turn up the volume on my usually semi-muted alterna-crap station to try to figure out what my ears were actually hearing. I mean radio stations stooping to call Metallica "alternative" is one thing, but pegging Rush in the same category would be something completely different. I mean how long could it be 'till Warrant and Poison were considered "alternative"?

Then the horsey bray kicked in and I put two-and-two together.

I'm more impressed that the vampire from "Fright Night" appears at the beginning of the video.

First of all, I want to say that I think "Under Rug Swept" is an excellent album. And just as good as her first two albums. Musically and lyrically she's stronger than ever IMO.

Second, anyone who questions the meaning behind "Hands Clean" only needs listen to the words. It's pretty clear.

I love the album and think its far superior to SFIJ.

I think So Unsexy is the best track on the record right along with "You owe me nothing in return".
