subwoofer question

Right now, I have a subwoofer made by yamaha. I can't remember what model it is, but i was wondering if I can add second subwoofer made by differnt company, like sony. My receiver is sony 333es. One thing I can say about my old subwofer is that it is an active subwoofer.
Is it just better to have exact same subwoofer or can i mix it up. Also, if i can use two seperate unit, can i mix passive and active subwoofers or they have to be both same.

thanks

You can use two different subs if you want

Just get a y-splitter/adapter and attach it to the LFE output on the receiver, then route one cable to each sub.

To use a passive sub you would need an external power amp to power it.

With Bass from a sub there is no need to match subs.

As for the suggestion to use a Y-Adapter... you DO NOT need one as the ES receiver comes with two sub out jacks.

I am going to disagree just a bit.

With two subs made by two different companies I believe you may have issues with the crossovers and trying to get them to balance. I am not saying it cannot be done it is something to be aware of.

Also I would never mixed a passive box with a powered box.
