A singer can sound better live than on their CD = Maynard James Keenan.

The guy just amazes me what kind of range he has in his vocals. He can go sing beautifully like he did on his A Perfect Circle album, then turn around and just have this demon voice that doesnt stop, not to mention he is the king of holding long winded screams.

I think he is one of the most underrated, if not the most, singers of our time. Kind of easy to be when no one knows who the hell you are.

Yeah, Maynard's the man (or woman depending upon his attire.)

As for the long winded screams MJKTool mentioned, Maynard was given an award by Spin magazine for "2001 Rock Growl of the Year" for his 30 second scream on The Grudge.

In that group of current singers, I'd throw Dream Theater's vocalist. He's got a much broader range than even MJK and commanding vocals all through that.

Dave Matthews. I enjoy MJK's stuff, but I'm not a fan of U2 or REM.

In terms of voice only, Maynard James Keenan wins hands down. He has the most range by far.

Sebastian Bach could all sing all of the metioned above.
As could Mikey Steelheart (his voice was used in the movie Rock Star)
I also agree with James Labrie from DT
We cant forget the guy from Queensryche....

I dont think in the rock world there have been many great vocalists in the past 10 years or so...
If they do have good voices they arent showing it..
I think the era of really singing died when "grunge" came out..

I have heard of Tool, but to be honest I have never heard and will prolly never hear a Tool song in my lifetime. Unless they go Top 40 or something.

I used to own the first 2 Tool CDs but gave them to a friend. I rarely bother to learn the names of bandmembers.

Earlier stuff of U2 (and thus Bono), I think his voice is good...some newer stuff is ok too...

REM (and Stipe) never did anything for me personally...

Not a DMB fan either....

Maynard James Keenan has an unbelievable voice. But allow me to compare for a moment...

Someone suggested that Dream Theater's singer has a better range than MJK. If we're talking musically with singing notes, that may very well be true. But I'm thinking in terms of different types of voice, singing, howling, etc. In that way, I think that MJK has him beat.

Another vocalist with great range I'd like to throw in the mix here is Michael Patton from Faith No More / Mr. Bungle / Fantomas / Lovage / Tomahawk. He's active in all of those bands currently except for FNM, which is no longer in existence (such a pity).

Unfortunately I knew Mike Maj. I was very good friends with
some of the guys in that band. I was raised in Norwalk CT.

I'm actually really suprised to find that he is still working.
