Name an Innovative (inspired by the kittie thread)

Name a band that brought something new and original. It's that simple. I just want to get a list of interesting bands.

Mr. Bungle is definitely original.

Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie, and the cure for the goth scene.

When Metal was going hard and a new sound was needed..
Nirvana, NIN, Tori amos, Smashing Pumpkins brought in a new line of music. that reached beyond the basics of being metal and being country. Nirvana with the whole movement of Alternative scene. NIN branching out of industrial and hitting the scene big bringing its foundings there, and tori, after a failed first album bringing in the whole story telling, Hybreed of folk blues/rock. lastly smashing pumpkins. I mention these simply because Billy did in an article for the L.A. times once saying that these bands were bringing in a new future for music. A new sound for good, but sadly they didn't complete the revolution( yeah like smashing pumpkins are doing anything now that they broke up )

As for the whole concerts.. I would say KISS brought that to the table to a new level.

Others to note:
Ramones
Pixies
Bad Religion

And it would be silly for me not to mention the Beatles. sure at a basic form, they were just a sort of boy band, but there music and there actions as people throughout there actions and there views changed the way you look at rock.

The Meteors singlehandedly stared the psychobilly genre.
The Pogues introduced celtic/folk to punk.
Social Distortion combined blues and punk (among other styles).
The Adicts were one of the first pop-punk bands and also brought theatrical aspects with them.
Agent Orange combined surf and punk.
Dick Dale practically started surf music and may be the first person to play a right-handed guitar with his left hand.
The Johnny Burnette Trio brought rockabilly to the mainstream and also gave the genre it's name.
Mother Love Bone jumpstarted grunge.
Wu-Tang Clan Japanese music and rap? Yup!

some other innovative bands:
Bill Haley & His Comets
Midnight Oil
Public Enemy
RUN DMC
X
Beastie Boys
Royal Crown Revue
Snuff

and...

THE CLASH!!!

Deftones17,

I would have to disagree with Slipknot. Mushroomhead was doing the same thing way before them.

I will also add the Meat Puppets (combined country and hardcore).

Who started the whole rap/rock thing because they should get some notice for that. Was it Run DMC and Aerosmith? Was Public Enemy and Anthrax the first rap/metal collaboration?

RunDMC was definitely one of the first with Rock and Rap.

IMO it was 24-7 Spyz that invented the metal/rap genre. They get no recognition and there are some bands like 311 that are absolute direct rip-offs of 24-7 Spyz.

The Police - Innovative because they were the first "fake" punk band that made it, then they switched their sound album to album, with the "Reggatta De Blanc" style falling into the background more and more each album.

Nirvana - Yeah I know a lot of people say they suck, but with one song they pretty much wiped out an era of hair bands and glam metal.

I agree. But I have heard so many people bashing them lately saying that they were not that important to music. I think they were the main reasons why we actually had some interesting mainstream music in the 90s.

Yes, Nirvana does not suck. Maybe they weren't the first grunge band - maybe they didn't make the best music - but they were the best grunge band as far as I'm concerned.

Has anyone said the Beatles yet? 'cause you gotta say the beatles. Sure they were square pop in the beginning, but they became something completely different that changed everything

No one else does what Tool does, so I'd say them most definetly. I would also say that Korn brought a whole different kind of sound to mainstream.

A lot of Tool reminds me of Shellac and Slint -- the typical early '90s Chicago-Louisville sound. I would suggest picking up Action Park by Shellac and Spiderland by Slint. I think you might really like them. Give 'em a listen!
