Looking for suggestions for Latin Hiphop/Rap

When I was in high school friends got me into Kid Forst and Lighter Shade of Brown and some other stuff on compilations that I can't remember now. I would like some suggestions on new cds and artist that I should check out now.

Can't help ya much with hip hop/rap. Here in Atlanta the local university's station (WRAS) plays a couple of hours of cool hispanic music on Sunday nights. It's a mix of alternative and hip hop stuff. My wife is hispanic... I'll ask her if she can help you out.
We both tend to like things more along the lines of Soda Stereo which is more "normal" sounding alternative rock. Hmmm, I do like Manu Chau and his old band Mano Negra.
They can flirt with hip hop a bit. But that is all I can help ya with for now!

Oh, go to www.allmusic.com and do a search for those artists you like. Allmusic will list a few similar bands.

They had connections to cypress hill when they started. I believe Sen Dog helped them get started. I really enjoy them.

Have you listened to Control Machete? I don't have any of their CDs, but they have three songs on the Amores Perros soundtrack, which I do have.

You might like the Amores Perros soundtrack.

Here are a few 30 second clips:

Si Senor – Control Machete
(used in the "Crazy Legs" commercial).

Pesada-Con Maigaz - Control Machete

Coolo – Illya Kuryaki / The Valderrames

La Cumbia Del Garrote - Los Del Garrote
(cumbia, not rap)

Check out Ozomatli. It's kind of a blend between traditional Latin music and hip-hop. Some songs have Spanish lyrics, others are in English, and a bunch feature people rapping rather than singing. Interesting stuff, and they recently released a new album, "Embrace the Chaos". Has guest spots from Common (previously known as Common Sense) and a few other big names in hip-hop.

I'm really into this right now, too!

Here's a couple of good comps:

Latin Hip-Hop (from K-Tel Records no less)
MTV Lingo (a comp from the latin version of MTV)
The Best of International Hip-Hop (hip-hop from all over the world with some especially good latin stuff included)

And here are some artists that I like:
Orishas (Cuban hip-hop)
Ozomatli (with Cut Chemist from Jurassic 5)
Delinquent Habits (Sen Dog from Cypress Hill's cousin - much better than Cypress Hill IMHO)
Plastilina Mosh (Mexico's version of the Beastie Boys)
Molotov (More latino version of Rage Against The Machine)

Those are the top ones but I'm learning about more all the time. I don't even speak Spanish, but this music speaks to me.

Hope this helps,

talespinner

If you like stuff with a harder edge at all, you should check out Puya.

You can use this link to go to CDNow and listen to samples of their stuff.

Does anyone know who does the song to that Levi Jeans commercial, where they say "Si Senor" a bunch of times while that guy is walking with the funky legs? Heh. Thanks.
