Best band of the 80s?
The Smiths, IMO, are my favorite band of the 80s. Although not as popular as Duran Duran or, say, Wham! they certainly had more to them then most bands of that decade.

I'm going to have to go with Metallica.
During the 80's, their stuff laid the foundation for all of the heavier bands out now.
The Black album (IMO) ushered in the era of Metallicrap.

the black album was still pretty good, but it was certainly a segue into metalli-pop. I don't think there new stuff is that bad but it is not the metallica that I know and love
