JVC HR-S3800U S-VHS Deck...
Thinking about this model as a purchase. Got pretty good reviews from "consumer" sites, but I thought I'd ask all of you guys (the "pros", of course!) if anyone owns it & how is picture quality, etc.
Also, does anyone know if by using SVHS connector out of a DVD by-pass the Macrovision (copy-protection) circuit?

S-VHS
JVC makes very good VCR's... I have the HR-S7800U which has the flying erasehead and quite a few other bells & whistles.
If you are actually going to use the SVHS-ET mode then it is fantastic! If all you are going to do is use it in the "normal" VHS, non-SVHS modes then don't get it... As the performance in this setting is just average.
It does not defeat the Macroprotection... You still need to buy a CopyMaster or a Sima SCC unit.

I have one of these models, works well, pain in the *** to use with the HD receiver as I have to switch back and forth between the HD RGB output and the S-Video output.
Only consider a S-VHS VCR if you plan on recording in the S-VHS mode otherwise just buy a decent VHS model.

Hi, just curious, are you guys saying that the quility of the standard VHS recording from ANY S-VHS machine is not as good as a recording from standard VHS recorder? I was thinking of getting a S-VHS also and didn't know this was a problem. Thanks!

But if you use the S-VHS mode of course it will look superior to standard recordings. What I like about the JVC models is that it allows you to use regular $2 VHS tapes in the S-VHS ET mode, rather than the $4 S-VHS tapes (of course the quality will increase with the nicer tape, much like the type I, II & IV of the cassette era).
