PSB Speaker Set Up (stereo)

I have ordered two PSB Alpha intro speakers and a PSB SubSonic 5. These will be connected to a Panasonic RV31 DVD player through an Arcam stereo (not 5.1) receiver/amp. I am not sure the best way to connect this together. Should I connect both stereo (left and right) channel inputs to the left and right inputs on the Subsonic 5 and then run the Alpha speakers from the high pass outputs on the Subsonic 5? Or should I split the outputs Y splitter) from the receiver/amp and and connect both to the inputs on the subsonic 5 and the Alphas? My receiver/amp does not have a separate bass woofer output.
I intend to run this for a while then buy a new 5.1 receiver. I am considering the Onkyo 494 but as i use the system for both DVD films and CD's I would welcome anyones views on good receivers which are excellent with CD music as well as DVD films.
Thanks
