Artists who are better after they left a band?

Artist who you think did better after they left a band they were in to either start a new band or go solo.

Either they left the band they were in or the band broke up for whatever reason.

Phil Collins - Genesis
Peter Gabriel - Genesis
Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) - Nirvana
Eric Clapton - Cream
George Michael - Wham (ok, this one is stretching it, I mean did Andrew Ridgley really contribute that much?
Roger Waters - Pink Floyd (only because I like his stuff better than Gilmore Floyd stuff)

Belinda Carsile after the Go-Go's.

Bjork after the Sugarcubes.

Juliana Hatfield who left Blake Babies.

And I love Throwing Muses, but Kristin Hersh's solo stuff topps anything she did with the band.

And of course Tori Amos after she left Y Kant Tori Read?

Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs)

Had that one song "Carnival"

I hope Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit) does well on his own

I'd agree with most of these, but you've gotta burn if you think either Floyd or Roger Waters was better off after he left. The band's never been the same

Do you mean sold better or made better music?

Frank Black - Pixies (not better, but equal).
Kim Deal (Breeders) - Pixies (ditto)
Dionne Farris - Arrested Development
Richard Patrick (Filter) - Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist
Dave King (Flogging Molly) - Fastway
Joan Jett - Runaways
Danny Elfman - Oingo Boingo
John Reis (Rocket From The Crypt) - Pitchfork/Drive Like Jehu
Michael Jackson - Jackson 5
Damon Albarn (Gorillaz) - Blur (I wouldn't say the music is better, but it's proabably sold better)

You are correct, neither Floyd or Waters were better off. But between the two, Waters is puts out better music than post Waters Floyd.

Better music.

However, I do stand corrected on my Waters/Floyd remark.

If you're talking about making better music, I would disagree. Like Patrick Bateman, I feel he works better within the confines of Genesis.

ummm...Sting?

I loved The Police and to this day think they were one of the greatest rock bands ever, but Sting would never have been able to do a lot of the things he wanted to do (musically) had he not left.

We'd have never seen albums like Dream of the Blue Turtles, Nothing Like the Sun or Soul Cages from that band.
