Scanners......

will blow your mind!

Picked up a copy of this today at a B&M store with the initials BB!

A beautiful 16x9 transfer, though once or twice a tad too soft. Stilll the best this film has ever looked in a home video/laser/DVD format.

Furthermore, for Mono 2.0 audio the sound on this disc is very, very impressive. Howard Shore's score, the scanning sound effects, and the sounds that the scanners can hear, imperceptible to us lowly humans, are excellent. My only complaint is that a 5.1 soundtrack would have put this sucker through the roof.

Especially for $10.00 MSRP $14.99

Extras are minimal, but of note is the sole extra, a trailer which is British, and states before the trailer,

"British Board of Film Censors: an X trailer for an X film."

The Brits are extremely uptight about film violence. Sort of like how Jack Valenti and the MPAA are uptight about sex and full-frontal nudity!

A great film about corporate greed, corporate espionage, corporate warfare, people with special powers, and Science run amok! watch it as a double feature with the X Men, speaking of the letter X.

Finally, another great Cronenberg film out on DVD. you are ordered to buy it! You won't be disappointed! Now all we need is The Brood out on DVD and then I'll be in Cronenbergian cyborg/hog/ian heaven!

cheers, Tony Block

P.S. Scan together! Scan together!

P.P.S. Hint! Hint! I went to three B&M stores with the initials BB, and all three already had Dressed to Kill available for purchase. Furthermore, one of the three stores already had all the MGM Midnight Movies Sci-Fi & horror titles, 8 in all, which are streeting on the same date as SCANNERS available for purchase!
Naughty! Naughty!

since you seem to be even more of a Cronenberg fan than I am (I can't resort to buying vhs for anyone anymore)....and since you are a New Member....
do you have the Canadian version of eXistenZ?
It's a special edition. I got that one and sold the US release.

Check out what I wrote in this thread:
(you can get it online at any Canadian etailer)

woah....stop......back up.... just my opinion, but you should really reconsider that one. I think that Dead Ringers is Cronenberg's masterpiece. I also think that all serious Cronenberg fans should own the Criterion dvd of DEAD RINGERS. It was my first Criterion purchase and is an amazing dvd. The extras are perfect and some are as creepy as the film. Just out of curiousity, why are you not interested in seeing Dead Ringers?
Not that it probably means much because different Cronenberg fans have very various favorites...but my top three favorite Cronenberg films are:
1. Dead Ringers
2. eXistenZ
3. Naked Lunch

My favorite Cronenberg film changes constantly, I don't really have one because all of his films are excellent, with the possible exception of M Butterfly, and I learn or see something different every time I watch one of his films.

www.mhvf.net

had a recent poll for favorite Cronenberg film and i voted for Videodrome, but I could have easily voted for

eXistenz
Crash
Dead Ringers
Dead Zone
The Brood
Scanners
Rabid

or

Shivers
!

cheers, Tony Block

if you do, I hope you like it at least half as much as I do. It might be one of Cronenberg's most normal films, but that doesn't make it any less disturbing. ("normal" as in deals with people and nothing supernatural....like Crash). But Jeremy Irons playing twin gynecologists is definitely his best performance (I easily forget that one person is playing two roles..)
If you do rent it, I suggest renting the Criterion dvd (not the nonCriterion dvd or a vhs or anything)...
the Criterion has some really great features....
http://www.criteriondvd.com/details.asp?spine=21
especially the scketches and drawings by Cronenberg...

I was disappointed there wasn't a 5:1 soundtrack on Scanners but overall I was psyched to get it. One of my all time favorites.

Videodrome is awesome too!

Cronenberg Rocks!
