What does "Subscribe to Forum" mean?

I've noticed this since the upgrade, but never knew what it meant. I clicked it hoping it would be explained, but it just said "Your subscription to this forum has been added."

So, what does that mean?

Traditionally, choosing to "subscribe" to a VBB or UBB forum meant that you'd periodically recieve a list of all the new or updated topics in that forum. Check your e-mail.

Note that this option is different from subscribing to a thread, in that it updates you on changes to the entire forum, not just one line of discussion.
