The first one's from Universal Laser, the second is from Megastar. I believe UL has been price-cuting many of their DVDs that have been out for awhile. While they used to all retail for $49.95 U.S. many are now only $29.95

one difference is that the perception of Megastar is one of being a superior company. Megastar discs are pressed in Japan if I'm not mistaken, as opposed to local (HK) or China for Universe. "Made in Japan" carries a lot of weight in HK. Other than that there isn't really much difference in this particular example.

Universe (and Mei Ah) has done a lot of price cutting on many of their older titles as well.

I have the Universe version of Prison on Fire, and I thought it was a pretty solid DVD. Good picture. If you're really curious you might want to pose this same question on the Asian DVD Guide forum. Perhaps someone has the Megastar version.

Versions

Neither company is consistently better with their own version. Megastar versions are often falsely presumed to be better due to their price, but there is little to substantiate this. In some cases Megastar is better, and in others Universe is (IE: Megastar versions often have an overly soft picture due to PAL sources). Unfortunately the two companies rarely put in substantial effort to distinguish their own version by offering a longer cut, more extras, etc. By buying the Universe disc you shouldn't feel that you are buying an inferior version. Where the two companies differ most sinificantly is in quality control in relation to disc replication. Universe is by far the poorer of the two, relying on their own replication facilities while Megastar outsources to Japan. As the LD market showed us previously, the Japanese replicated disc tend to bear a much higher level of quality control. That said, the substantive differences between the actual content on the discs can vary by title, but rarely is one markably better than the other.
