...fans of Tarkovsky's 1972 sci-fi epic Solaris can rejoice: this film is supposed to have been released on R2 DVD this week:

Coool!

Do you have any details, Hendrick? Particularly regarding English subtitles.

Also, as you're our resident European cinema expert, do you have any news regarding the release of Lindsay Andersons' Mick Travers trilogy:

If...
O Lucky Man
Brittania Hospital (I think Criterion are going to do this one, which is a shame as it's probably the worst of the bunch)

Probably one of the UK's finest directors and he's been completely overlooked so far.

Thanks man

"first r2 release that i am willing to buy"

...you won't have to, since RUSCICO have every intention of releasing R1 (=NTSC) versions of their DVDs, too!...

"However..." what? I don't see the problem. Some anonymous Criterion rep says that some NYC-based retailer doesn't have the rights to distribute the Ruscico disc and...what? That doesn't really mean anything, does it? If it bothers you, then don't buy the disc from that store. There are other online stores that carry it.

Really, St.Petersburg is the only one licensed company to distribute Russico DVDs amoung russian companies in the USA.

Held up...

My "Solaris" from http://www.rbcmp3.com has been held up... The UPS tracking says it's in my city... but still no sign. I have phoned UPS and they don't really have an answer. I'll see what tomorrow brings...

It's 2.35 : 1.00

Have no fear... Al Brown has confirmed that it is 2.35:1

Cheers,

...nice review ... except for the fact that RUSCICO have pulled back (at least) the R2 discs due to manufacturing errors ... so it is no longer available from amazon.fr (who sent me an e-mail to this effect a few days ago)...

. . . sigh . . .

I just wanted to comment on the French 'recall'. There was some speculation in one DVD Talk thread that these discs (the region 0 ones) had problems playing on DVD-Rom drives and that perhaps this was why the French discs were recalled.

I'm not sure about the French discs, but I did try my discs on my DVD-Rom drive (NEC 5700A drive, WinDVD software), and they played perfectly. I didn't try to navigate all the special features, but I did check both discs. Also, I have viewed the entire film and all supplements on my Pioneer 414, where it played perfectly.

Has anyone personally experienced any problems with the region 0 discs of SOLARIS?

Btw, I was wondering what you guys thought about the remix. I'm generally quite a purist on these matters, but I've been completely won over - I think it's great! And this is no 'sweetened' mono track; this is a very aggressive, highly directional mix. And I'm not just saying 'it sounds great for a mid-70's arthouse film shot in the former USSR'; I'm saying it sounds great... period.

Any thoughts?

Oh yes... and it's definitely 2.35:1 (or thereabouts) despite what the box says.
