it's coming, but...
From the Asian DVD Guide web site (before it was dismantled): "Toei will be releasing Battle Royale on DVD in Japan on 6/8/2001 for rental only at a price of 16000 Yen. The sell-through date for Toei's Battle Royale DVD is rumored to be 9/21/2001 at a price of 5200 Yen. The specs on Toei's website for this DVD make no mention of English subtitles."

Any sites selling VCDs of this now?
Although I'm 98% DVD, I buy a lot of Asian Films on VCD because they are cheap and that way I can buy several on a whim just to see something different. I'll often get lucky with a gem.
BTW, I recommend these VCDs (if you can bring yourself to buy VCDs):
SHIRI (Korean - good Action film, Only film to gross more than Titanic in Korea)
THE RING (Japanese, horror... creepy, and the fact that everyone's speaking a language I don't understand makes it even creepier)

Thanks, I just ordered a crapload of VCDs from DDDHouse.com.
I picked up BATTLE ROYALE, and every VCD on the main page that had (1) a gun (2) a sword or (3) a sexy Asian babe pictured on the cover. Hey, some of those have to be good.
It's scary when the total came to HK$700, but that's less than a $100 US.

I ordered the VCD last week from http://www.dddhouse.com. I received an email on Saturday that it was shipped (I also ordered Accidental Spy DTS, both came out to about $26) and that I should receive it in about 7 days.
Total for the VCD (with shipping) comes out to about $10-12, pretty reasonable I think.
Once I get it I'll post a review.

The items that I could read were: data files, a video of some kind (making of?), trailers & TV spots, one line says simply Beat Takeshi (interview? bio? what?). What I had heard before indicated NO English subtitles, but I also have heard that a Hong Kong DVD is coming before too long, which would likely have subs but be coded region 3. Apparently, they've just released a special edition cut of the film to theaters in Japan that runs 8 minutes longer that features more gore and punched up sound. No doubt this version will get a video release as well...

Reports that I have read indicate that the VCD quality is not very good. Lots of heavy pixellation and a lot of the action takes place at night with the screen basically just going black for long periods of time. But hey it's not a big investment.
It is a very cool movie. Saw it at SIFF this week.

My VCD arrived last Thursday but unfortunately I was away so couldn't watch until last night - quality is excellent for VCD - couple of points where the subtitles can't be read as the background is light coloured (also happpens on hard subbed DVDs) and a few of the long tracking shots are jerky. Apart from that it's recommended - good film and if you want to see it now then worth getting while waiting for the DVD.

I got my Battle Royale along with other movies at Asiandiscs.com
Hey All, I was browsing around different sites and found a store that carried Battle Royale VCD and other asian movies at quite cheap prices! I also received my order in a few days instead of waiting for a week from overseas. The site is even having Music cds in a while! I would recommend http://www.asiandiscs.com to anyone!!
