How about you start a music forum here? There are book and computer forums, and I would really like to talk about music with people from DVDTalk.

There are plenty of music discussions in Other. Discuss that subject in that forum.

I agree with starting a Music Forum. It's probably a lot of work to moderate all the forums, but if you ever decide to start another one I think a Music Forum would be a great idea.

I'd go for it as it would foster more music discussions. Geoff mentioned previously that he was considering starting a music forum, so it might happen if there is enough interest.

At first I thought it wouldn't be such a good idea, but then I see all the extra video game discussion in that forum and I think a music forum would be great. I love music and it seems like a lot of people of the forum do as well. And it seems like we'd be able to discover new music. A definite positive!

The only thing that worries me is to lose even more substance in Other. I think it would still be worth it though. In Other, there would still be sports, political, various debates, fun threads, and (for the lack of a better word) "other" threads.

In short, go for it!

The Music Forum? Get in line, bub. I requested a "DTSC Forum" months ago and am still waiting on it!

That's a rather weak reason when Geoff went out of his way to take Book and Video Game discussions out of that forum.

I'd like to see a MusicTalk forum as well... unless Geoff wants to do the right thing and ditch all non-DVD and non-movie discussions and put the DVD back in DVDTalk.

The new book forum is something that Geoff aaid he has wanted to do for a while because he is an avid reader, but he didn't think there was enough interest for it. When he saw there was interest, he started it.

The video game forum exists because Geoff's brother (I believe) was supposed to start a separate site, VideoGameTalk.com. Things happened and that never came to fruition, so Geoff decided to start a video game forum here.

BTW, I never said I didn't think there should be a music forum. I was just telling the original poster that Other is the proper forum for discussion of music (as it stands right now, at least).

I don't think a music forum is a good idea and I am a major league music guy. If things get more segmented the traffic is really going to slow down even more.

Plus with all the new forums this place is starting to remind me of another site...cough...HTF...cough

Why would the traffic slow down? Wouldn't it just be spread out to the other forums? With books, DVD's, videogames and the possiblity of music not allowed in the other forum, that leaves a whole lotta room for more naked ladies.

FWIW I didn't have strong feelings either way over the Book Forum but now it is there I use it and can see that traffic is slowly picking up and, anyway, looks to be higher than was the case when book talk belonged in Other.

The same might well be true of the proposed Music Forum. Presumably music events (concert reviews etc) would go there as well as general discussion about bands and albums etc?

Until such a time as a decision is made, why not preface all music-related post with <b>MUSIC:</b> so that they stand out in Other and can be searched for?

(I usually scan all pages with new posts on but this would certainly assist those that thought music discusion was being swamped....)

If there can be an Other forum at a place called DVDTalk, I don't see why any of the forums you suggested wouldn't be equally viable. I'd probably use the WTF Forum a lot due to the fact that I say that to myself everytime I read over the forums list. If a book forum and a video game forum are acceptable, so should be EVERYTHING else!

Please explain your thinking on this.

To a greater or lesser extent, the non-DVD specialised forums arose because some people felt drowned out in Other. Does the fact of their/our migration have an adverse affect on anyone else?

My thinking is that I don't give a damn if people who have interest in books and video games feel "drowned out in Other." It's time for those members to do a reality check and realize that this is indeed a DVD forum and not the Quality Paperback Book Club or Gaming Magazine! If Geoff can cater to those interests who's to say there aren't other subjects that are equally as popular and thus worthy of having their own forum? A lot of people talk about music in the Other forum so why wouldn't Geoff create a new forum for them? Some of the topics Desmondp mentions could very well be equally as popular as a Book and Video Game forum. Why not take a poll on adding 5-10 more forums here? Or better yet ditch all of the bull$hit forums before it really gets out of hand.

I'll ask again, <b>gotdvd?</b>: does the fact/possibility of the migration of people from Other to non-DVD specialised forums on this site have an adverse affect on anyone else? Please explain exactly how, remembering your recent comments just above.

And, given that this is - as you say - a DVD site, why have <i>any</i> forums other than DVD-specifc ones; why have an <i>Other</i> Forum at all? I just don't see any particular logic of what you are saying.

And there shouldn't really be any need to point out that things change, progress evolve and that, despite the name, surely Geoff can put anything he chooses under the DVDTalk umbrella so long as people keep visiting....? If Geoff didn't want Feedback and Suggestions then he wouldn't have created this particular place for people to post such material. He is free to ignore it just as you are free to ignore any forums that don't reflect <i>your</i> interests.

<small>(I have already posted <i>my</i> view as to the feasibility of a Music Forum in my post of July 7th., incidentally).</small>

You just don't get it, this is a DVD site! If you walk into a jeweler you don't expect to find salesmen asking you to try out a new vacuum cleaner do you? I swear this place is becoming more and more like a frickin' department store. Heaven forbid a newbie comes to DVDTalk expecting DVD to be the site's specialty.

And, given that this is - as you say - a DVD site, why have <i>any</i> forums other than DVD-specifc ones; why have an <i>Other</i> Forum at all? I just don't see any particular logic of what you are saying.
Oh for God's sake, perhaps you missed my other dozen comments about how I think the Other forum should be shut down! I'm not discriminating against any forum in particular. I think all non DVD and non movie forums should get the axe.

And there shouldn't really be any need to point out that things change, progress evolve and that, despite the name, surely Geoff can put anything he chooses under the DVDTalk umbrella so long as people keep visiting....? Things change? Really, thanks for the update as I've been living under a rock all my life and didn't realize this. As I said before, I know this is Geoff's site and he can feel free to allow whatever rubbish forums he chooses to. I ask you though, what sense does it make to have all of that other crap at a place called DVDTalk? Why doesn't he just go ahead and start new dotcoms for Books, Video Games, etc.? Maybe I seem hard headed but I really enjoyed this forum back when it was an actual DVD forum.

My main question <i>"does the fact/possibility of the migration of people from Other to non-DVD specialised forums on this site have an adverse affect on anyone else?"</i> remains unanswered.

DVD Talk is now more of a brand name rather than a description, IMNSHO. And there is <i>nothing</i> whatsoever wrong with such an evolution: when you go to a department store you visit the section(s) that interest(s) you regardless of the origins of the original store or its name. The very existence of the departments you don't visit need have no negative effect on your overall shopping experience.

What sense does it make? <b>Commercial sense</b> presumably.
