VEGAS is a drama inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a fourth-generation rancher tasked with bringing order to Las Vegas in the 1960s, a gambling and entertainment mecca emerging from the tumbleweeds. Ralph Lamb wants to be left in peace to run his ranch, but Las Vegas is now swelling with outsiders and corruption which are intruding on his simple life. Recalling Lamb's command as a military police officer during World War II, the Mayor appeals to his sense of duty to look into a murder of a casino worker - and so begins Lamb's clash with Vincent Savino, a ruthless Chicago gangster who plans to make Vegas his own. Assisting Lamb in keeping law and order are his two deputies: his diplomatic, even-keeled brother Jack and his charming but impulsive son Dixon. Ambitious Assistant District Attorney Katherine O'Connell, who grew up on the ranch next to the Lambs, also lends a hand in preserving justice. In Vegas, two powerful men - Lamb and Savino - are engaged in a fierce battle for control of the budding oasis, and for both of them, folding is not an option.

for some reason i thought this was airing on Thursdays. I'll check it out since i'm a Vegas junkie.

Will check it out based on the cast alone, but I don't have high hopes. Is this going to be DALLAS in Vegas?

I'm more interested in how much of the 60's Vegas will they recreate. Those were interesting times before the corporations moved in with their high rise cookie cutter hotels.

Strong cast -- I'll be tuning in.

Dallas was a soap opera. This is a crime drama.

You're right. The Wire is exactly the same kind of show as Melrose Place.

I like the actors but still not sure if I want to see it since I don't watch any CBS shows.

Might check it out though couldn't they have come up with a more original title?

Vegas (Vega$) was a old show with Robert Urich and Las Vegas was a NBC series with James Caan.

The reviews are that this isn't a crime drama but a crime procedural set in 1960s Vegas. I was pretty bummed out when I read over the collected reviews on AICN.

Yet another procedural on CBS? C'mon...

Procedural? Wow and here i thought CBS was finally going into a different direction. This really looked serialized. in the way that it's the sheriff vs the mob. How can they make a new case every week with that?

I was actually gonna tune in even though i hate CBS because of all the damn procedurals.

I'll still check it out but we'll see!

This can't be a full out procedural, especially with Chiklis as the main baddie. The plots can't be open and shut self contained if he's going to be in every episode. There obviously has to be some plot that carries over even if the Ralph Lamb character is solving cases in 60's Vegas.

I'm curious to know where they filmed this. Obviously there is no way in hell they could shoot this in 2012 Las Vegas.

You found this boring? I hope you don't prefer reality TV trash. If you only gave it ten minutes, you didn't give it much time at all. Most TV series take an ep. or three to find footing.


Entertaining, but relies heavily on archetype portrayals to carry it. The gangsters end the ep. eating spaghetti? Please....

That said, I felt it was well paced , but not perfect. Definitely trying to be Gunsmoke meets The Sopranos.

i think if this relies less on a case of the week, this could be really be good. (remember justified started pretty much as a case of the week show after the pilot)

You don't watch any CBS shows? That's great reasoning for not giving this a chance.

Well I liked it.. Really strong cast as others have mentioned and they seem to have spent some money on having the locations etc be time correct (or a least enough to fool me).. I was a little worried they would just do bad/cheap CGI for everything but that's not the case.. Ok the one "look out the window" had bad green screen shimmer on the edges but the rest was ok

plus I sort of like a step back from modern CSI shows with all of the BS super enhancing a reflection off someone's eyes that was caught on a bolt some where etc... Like when they found the blood in one of the buildings I of course was thinking "Ah case closed when they get the DNA results back in 5min due to TV magic... Oh wait, no DNA back then"

It also shows what a train wreck that fox show Mob Doctor is when that show is being advertised as a mix of "ER meets 24" and this show had way more action and mob vibe too it.. I'll keep watching

Meh, very bland. The whole 'someone got killed and we have to find the killer before the end of the episode, but watch closely because it's someone you've seen before!' is tired and i can't stand it.

Hopefully it goes more into a serialized manner instead of the case every week. No wonder i watch nothing on CBS. it's always the same old shit but with a 'new' coating.

I really don't see how this is viewed as a procedural. What, now that there's any time where a show solves a murder it's labeled a procedural? 24 solved lots of crimes, was it a procedural?

To me, the whole point of the murder, as well as the murder of the cop shown at the end of the episode is to show how Vegas is basically corrupt at this point, and that there's now literally a new Sheriff in town. Only in this case, there's one for the city, and one for the mob.

I see this as an introduction to what Vegas was back then. Mostly a desert, with a shiny oasis run by the mob. Whores, casinos, corruption. It was great to see a recreation of Downtown Vegas without the crappy roof on it.

Dennis Quaid said on the Ellen show they built the sets and shoot in Santa Clarita, CA.

I thought it was pretty damn good. Yeah it's a network show and isn't as gritty as something on HBO, but I thought it worked. I like that it's outside the box of what CBS would normally do in the crime drama genre.

Quaid was a good choice IMO to play Lamb. I think he has the presence and charisma to play a rugged old time sheriff. I love seeing Chiklis playing a full out villain this time around, especially a Chicago Mobster.

Man, Vegas was practically a wasteland back then. Just a dinky gambling town in the middle of the desert. It's amazing how much it's evolved over the years.

Going back to the discussion on whether or not this is a procedural. I don't think you can really classify this as a full out procedural like a CSI or NCIS. Alot of the plot seems to be carrying over to the next episode. The guy who committed the murder is linked to Savino. IIRC, his guy said they have a man on the inside who will take care of him so he won't talk. And now the murder of the corrupt sheriff is also linked to Savino and his goons. Las Vegas was a corrupt town operated by crime syndicates, so of course crimes and murders are going to happen and Ralph Lamb will have to do his job as sheriff. In the meantime, it appears Savino is becoming a more prominent and powerful figure in the Vegas underworld.

I'm sold on this show. I'm in for the season.

I think alot of the procedural talk was that it was filmed like one at times. Dead body, bring on team of investigators, talk to the witnesses/anyone that knew the victim, solve the case... rinse and repeat. Hopefully not every episode will be like that & the show does focus more on the mob dealings & the Michael Chiklis character
