Weathering With You (Makoto Shinkai)

GKIDS ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO "WEATHERING WITH YOU"

THE BREATHLESSLY-AWAITED NEW FEATURE FROM MAKOTO SHINKAI, DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL BOX OFFICE PHENOMENON YOUR NAME, (THE HIGHEST GROSSING JAPANESE ANIMATED FILM OF ALL TIME)

NEW YORK (May 23, 2019) – GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, announced it has acquired North American distribution rights for the animated feature WEATHERING WITH YOU, the new film from director Makoto Shinkai and producer Genki Kawamura, whose previous film Your Name set box office records in Japan and around the world ($360 million worldwide box office), and is currently receiving a major studio live-action remake from JJ Abrams.

GKIDS has set an awards qualifying run for 2019 with a theatrical release in early 2020 in both the original Japanese and a new English language version.

The all-rights deal finalized out of this year's Cannes Film Festival was negotiated by GKIDS' CEO Eric Beckman and Akihiro Takeda for Toho. The film opens in Japanese cinemas on July 19. Rights are sold worldwide by Toho.

"GKIDS is thrilled to be working with Makoto Shinkai and Genki Kawamura on Weathering With You, following their blockbuster hit Your Name," said GKIDS founder and CEO Eric Beckman. "We have been huge fans of Makoto Shinkai since his breathtaking 5 Centimeters Per Second, and he is unquestionably one of the top animation filmmakers working today. Weathering With You combines Shinkai's unparalleled visually beautiful and detailed animation with a riveting emotional story that will be sure to connect with audiences worldwide."

SYNOPSIS

GKIDS proudly presents the highly-anticipated new film from director Makoto Shinkai and producer Genki Kawamura, the creative team behind the critically-acclaimed, global smash hit Your Name. The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…

CANNES - Gkids, the U.S. distributor of 11 best animated feature Oscar nominees, has acquired North American rights for "Weathering With You," the new film from director Makoto Shinkai and producer Genki Kawamura.

Gkids has set an awards-qualifying run for 2019 with a theatrical release in early 2020, in both the original Japanese and a new English-language version.

Shinkai and Kawamura's previous film, "Your Name," set box-office records in Japan and around the world, grossing $358 million worldwide, becoming the third highest-grossing non-English language and non-Chinese movie of all time. It's currently getting a major studio live-action remake from J.J. Abrams.

"Weathering With You" follows Hokoda, a high-school freshman who runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, where he soon finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The unusually gloomy and rainy weather feels like a dark omen for his future. He lives his days in isolation until finding work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. One day, Hokoda meets a girl called Hina on a busy street corner. Bright and strong-willed, she possesses a strange and wonderful ability to stop the rain and clear the sky.

The film is the highly anticipated follow-up to Shinkai and Kawamura's previous, record-breaking collaboration.

"Gkids is thrilled to be working with Makoto Shinkai and Genki Kawamura on 'Weathering With You,' following their blockbuster hit 'Your Name,'" said Gkids founder and CEO Eric Beckman. "We have been huge fans of Makoto Shinkai since his breathtaking '5 Centimeters Per Second,' and he is unquestionably one of the top animation filmmakers working today."

He added: "'Weathering With You' combines Shinkai's unparalleled visually beautiful and detailed animation with a riveting emotional story that will be sure to connect with audiences worldwide."

Gkids is a producer and distributor of award-winning feature animation for both adult and family audiences. It also handles North American distribution for the famed Studio Ghibli library of films, one of the world's most coveted animation collections.

Gkids also produces the annual LA-based film festival Animation Is Film, which embraces the highest aspirations of animation as a cinematic art form and is a vocal advocate for filmmakers who push the boundaries of their work to the fullest range of expression.

I've been happy with GKIDS so far as an anime distributor. Their Blu-rays for the most part have been stellar.

I don't really understand why anime in particular is so backwards on digital platforms. Seems ridiculous to me that you have to buy the Japanese subbed and English dubbed versions separately for every single anime. Also the Miyazaki films aren't MA compatible? Ugh.

For a while, Funimation was doing it right. The digital copy code gave you both versions. But now their codes only redeem at the Funi streaming service.

iTunes has become my preferred service for anime movies. They usually give you both language versions and the subs aren't hardcoded.

Re: Weathering With You (Makoto Shinkai)

Good for iTunes to offer both languages. I assume some platforms have technical limitations for that.

As far as MA, that’s a choice by GKids (or their corporate umbrella or whatever) not to participate. They’d be MA if Disney still had the rights.

Actually, Movies Anywhere is refusing to allow smaller distributors on its service. Several smaller labels have been told they won't be invited into MA. There's talk that MA is even blocking Lionsgate from joining.

I get it now MA means Movies Anywhere, lol. Good thing I only buy Dvd's and Blu-rays. I don't get why Digital downloads are released before the Blu-rays, wouldn't it hurt physical copy sales or whatever.

That's exactly the point. Hollywood wants physical media to die off and everything moved over to streaming/downloads.

The good news is that anime labels make a lot of money off physical media, so there's less worry with companies like Funimation and Sentai Filmworks.

Re: Weathering With You (Makoto Shinkai)

I'm tempted by the Collector's Edition since that seems to be the only way to get 4k, but 80 bucks, and I would be buying it sight unseen. I already preordered the steelbook blu-ray...

Amazon was selling it for under $70 but I just noticed its now $80. I pre-order most Gkids films as soon as they get listed, Amazon normally drops the price before it gets released and sell them for the lowest price. I am ordering this film from Rightstuf with hope it would ship a few weeks early, maybe.

If you like Your Name I wouldn't worry about sight unseen. I drove 45 minutes to the cinemas twice to see Weathering With You.

Oh, I'm sure I'll love it (as will my daughter), just not 80 dollars sure that I'll like the soundtrack and all the goodies (we got the Your Name soundtrack but not in any kind of special edition because it didn't come out at the time). Plus if I want to watch it sooner the collectors comes out later than the other versions.

Re: Weathering With You (Makoto Shinkai)

I just bought the download SD version from itunes for about $15 so I can watch it tonight. The other day when I looked at the price of it on Amazon the SD version cost just as much as the HD one did.

I am still buying the 4K Limited Edition.

Re: Weathering With You (Makoto Shinkai)

The regular Blu-ray edition offers fairly extensive special features. I imagine the movie will look great in 4K. At the end of the day I don't think Weathering With You holds up as well as Your Name, but it's a decent movie in its own right. Passing on the coming collector's edition, the movie just isn't high enough on my personal list to drop that much money.
