Weekly Shonen Jump changes model: new chapters free, 1.99 for archive

So this was announced a few weeks ago but was just implemented this week.

Shonen Jump is a "boys" manga anthology published in Japan that has introduced manga like Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, and One Piece. In the US, they used to publish a much smaller anthology of old chapters on a monthly basis, then a few years ago they switched to an online model where a subscription got you a digital anthology of around 200+ pages of manga, the same week it was released in Japan.

So times changed again, and they radically changed their business model this week. Now, all new translated chapters are up, for free, via their website or app. So you can read the latest chapter of One Piece or Black Clover, the same day it goes on sale in Japan, for free, which seems insane considering they don't do this in their native country.

For 1.99 a month, you get access to their archives. It's still being updated, but, for instance, if you wanted to catch up on Black Clover, you could start from the beginning if you had a sub.

My monthly subscription lasted until January so they converted it to three months of this sub. They have some kinks to work out, but otherwise it's an amazing (legal) way to keep up with these series. I swear I don't mean to sound like a commercial (and I personally thought the digital anthology was a steal before they made this change).

Note that they have two apps: A Viz app and a Shonen Jump app (the SJ app may not be available on all devices). The Viz app has all of their manga, but if you just want to read the free chapters, it's much easier to just use the SJ app which automatically filters it down.
