Anime on Big Screen TV
 

Just wondering what some of you watch your anime on...computer or TV? I know a lot of people watch it on their computers but I watch mine on my 40 inch Samsung LCD with a Philips Soundbar and subwoofer and enjoy it very much. It's small compared to what a lot of people have but works for me.

I've been wondering why sometimes some anime on Blu ray doesn't sound as good as others and found out not all anime on Blu ray comes with HD sound which I did not know...assumed it was all HD sound but it isn't. Anyway from here onward I'll always check the description before I buy. The difference is amazing.

So what do you watch your anime on and how do you like it?

My TV is a "Sony 32EX720" My Blu-ray player is "Sony BDP-S790" and my soundbar is "Sony HT-CT150"
Very soon I will be buying a "Sony 49" XBR Series LED 4K Ultra HDTV - XBR-49X850B"

I have my computer hooked up to my TV and the only animes I watch on the computer is when they first get simulcast, then everything I like I buy on Blu-ray.

I watch on my TV, and BD audio/video sources are definitely not created equal.

I watch it on 55" Samsung 4K using Apple TV (Crunchyroll).

DVDs and Blu-rays and TV broadcasts of anime (i.e. Pokémon) on my 32-inch Sony Bravia.

The Sony Bravia is not very forgiving when it comes to VHS (I still have plenty of anime in this format), so I watch those on my 13-inch Toshiba TV/VCR combo.

However, Japanese VHS pre-records (I have quite a few), for some reason, look almost as good as the DVDs on my Sony Bravia, so that's where I watch those.

A 60" plasma most of the time. I don't enjoy watching anything on the computer but brief clips.

Thanks guys. I'm sure it looks good on McHawksons 55 and your 60 inch PhantomStranger. I only watch clips on the computer too just to see how an anime looks and to get an idea of the movie or series.

I've got a 60-inch plasma in the Home Theater and a 40-inch LCD in the bedroom. I only watch short clips on the computer. There's no way I'd sit at the computer to watch a full-length episode.

You guys with big HDTVs should check out FUNimation Streaming. The new 1080p streams are beautiful. Colors are bright and vivid. Lines are sharp. I don't see any color banding. I doubt I could tell the difference between their 1080p stream and a Blu-ray.

Crunchyroll streaming looks pretty good at 1080P, some less detailed shows don't look much different than their Blu-ray counterparts. It does affect certain shows in terms of PQ.

I was wondering if watching dvds and Blu-rays on a 4K TV, is there a noticeable improvement with image quality? I am about to buy one but I don't want to be disappointed if upgrading dvds to 4K don't look good.

I think you're getting a little bit confused about a 4K TV capabilities. My understanding is that I don't think you'll notice an improvement on a 4k TV with Blu-rays and DVDs unless you are watching a 4k Blu-ray Disc. Your TV won't upscale your DVD or Blu-ray to a 4k image.

Yes, that's correct. Only few 4K mastered blu ray movies are out and will be more later this year and beyond.

I am a bit confused I have a Blu-ray player "Sony BDP-S790" it does say it upscales to 4K if you have a 4K TV.

Thanks for the link. basically what I think I read for uncovering, I would be better off waiting for the technology to improve and for prices to come down.

Yes, it's better to. I saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on Netflix which claimed it's in 4K. The picture is nice but you can see film grainy. But there's an art of ocean, forest, and flower on Netflix that shown in real 4K and the picture is amazing.

As for movie, anime, etc..., it's best to wait for technology to improve.

Watch all my anime on my 110" screen via BenQ W6000 front projector. 1080P anime is glorious on it. Been spoiled rotten by my screen so anything smaller is a serious compromise in my book.

Unless a film was shot digitally, you're supposed to see film grain in high definition.

Or it's been DNRed to hell. Grain is glorious, enjoy it while you can. Film won't be around much longer.

My big problem with my new 64" plasma is that it's getting really hard to watch SD stuff on it, it just looks a little eyesore sometimes.

I had to buy a new TV two weeks ago so I bought the 4K TV, Sony XBR-43X830C for $799. I can't give an opinion of upconverting blu-rays to 4K yet. but trying to up-convert dvds looks like crap. how you turn the 4K up-convert on and off is by turning "BD-Rom 24p output" and "DVD-Rom 24p output" on the blu-ray player on or off.

I use a 40 inch 1080p HDTV and a 32 inch 720p HDTV for all my watching...

Most anime is upscaled for 1080p still so there is little benefit in watching at 4K.

watching animes in up-scaled 4K the the graphics outlines seems smoother, its hard to explain.

This has nothing to do with 4K but other features on the tv, i'm sure my Sony BDP-S790 blu-ray player also helped but I watched a few bad quaility spots of Shakugan no Shana season one on dvd and blu-ray, the worst of the video noise, posterization, color banding, and motion artifacts vanished.

We bought a 60" not too long ago, supposed to do 4K but we don't have a source for it yet.

But anyways we've been watching various DVDs on it and the quality varies. The last few seasons of David Tennant's run on DVD had some dodgy parts, but not horrible (the transition to hi def with Matt Smith was pretty stark, though).

My wife says she's played some Ranma on it (the old DVD sets) and she said they don't seem any worse than before (there's a lot of inherent source issues though).

All of these DVDs are being upconverted by the Panasonic Blu-ray player also.

I think if you get a blu-ray player made for 4K it should fix most.

I tried watching my Girls Bravo DVDs from Geneon, I couldn't watch it with my last tv also I used to have "DVD-Rom 24p output" on (now I know thats bad to have on)
It looked pretty good compared to what it used to look like.
